1 Chronicles 1-8 Names Are Known

Family Tree Template

Please read 1 Chronicles 1-8.

Reading a list of names is usually a very boring, dry thing to read for most people. This becomes especially true when one does not know the majority of people and do not see any connection with the people.

The majority of people do not really know their genealogy, nor care about it a whole lot. They know their immediate parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and maybe cousins. Beyond those people they do not know very many.

A major reason for not knowing those names is that they have never met most of the rest in their genealogy. Some people, however, dig into the past, writing up their entire genealogy for several hundred years or more.

In this passage the writer lists the names of fathers and sons from the time of Adam until the time of Benjamin, covering several thousand years of generations of people. As one reads this passage it is very repetitive, so and so is the son of so and so, and so and so is the son of so and so, on and on for eight chapters. One often wonders why God had this put in this long list.

Most of the names in this long list are names of people that there is no longer any mention of them in the Bible anywhere. There are in a sense a bunch of nobodies, unknowns. Yet, God chose to put their names on this list. God is concerned about everyone, whether famous or not.

Along with seeing this list, one can see a line of connection from Adam all the way to Benjamin. There is a thread that is being formed, that will also continue on for eternity.

Knowing that there is this connection and knowing that God is concerned about every person, can give one peace of mind. Although that list stops in the eighth chapter, it has not ended in reality. Several thousand years later Jesus was added to that list.

As a believer you are also a part of that genealogy. God knows your name and has it written down in the history books of heaven. You may not be someone very important in the eyes of this world, but you are important to God. He wants to have you in His genealogy list of His family.

God knows all the names of the stars, He also knows your name. Rest in peace knowing you are in His family for eternity.

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will know that God knows your name; that you will trust God’s plan for your life; and that you will know how important you are to God.

Numbers 1:2 Counted As Family

People census

Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one. Numbers 1:2

All around the world, nearly every nation does a regular count of how many people there are in the nation. Often this is done for the purpose of taxing the people. It can also to see changes in growth to plan the infrastructure for the future of the nation.

Most of the time, the census is taken for personal gain of the nation. It is not done for true care and concern for the people or even the individual.

While the Israelites were in the wilderness, God told Moses to take a census of every man with them. He was to list each man’s name, one by one, clan by clan and family by family. It was to be a very detailed listing of who was living in camp.

God knew the names of every person before Moses was to even begin the count. He also knew the number of people in the camp. Taking this census is one way God can show that He knows the name of every man and his family. As Moses counted the people, he would be able to tell them this information is for God. He wants to know each person by name. This was a physical showing that God knows their names.

Very often people think that God does not know who they are or where they are in life. They feel as if God has forgotten or ignored them. This becomes especially true when the person is going through a difficult time. Or they are praying for something and God does not seem to answer or hear.

There are times that every believer needs to be encouraged that God knows his name. He needs to be reminded that he is on God’s census list.

You may be at one of those times of struggle, wondering if God even knows your name. Rest assured that God does know your name. He is taking a census on a daily basis of who all of His children are and where they are. In fact, it is a constant census, every moment of the day.

God knows your name and is right there with you. As long as you believe in Jesus and follow Him, He will keep counting you as family.

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will know that God knows your name; that you will be a part of God’s eternal family; and that you will trust that God is always with you, even in the deserts of life.

Exodus 28:29 Remembering Before God

red heart necklace

“Whenever Aaron enters the Holy Place, he will bear the names of the sons of Israel over his heart on the breastpiece of decision as a continual memorial before the LORD.” Exodus 28:29

One of the ways that people like to remember other people is wearing a necklace that brings a memory of a person. There are many younger girls that wear a necklace with the BFF, Best Friends Forever, stamped up it. They want to remember their best friend at all times.

Another way that many people remember someone is with a small picture inside a pendant hung around the neck. These can be pictures of someone still alive or a loved one who has passed away. Either way it is a way of remembering the person. It can bring back many memories of good times, the love and friendship of that person.

As Aaron was to enter the Holy Place, the temple, he was to wear a piece that carried all the names of the sons of Israel, the tribes of Israel, over his heart. As he met with God, this would help him to remember all of the people of Israel and to bring their needs before God.

One of his jobs as high priest, Aaron would have to bring the offerings and sacrifices of the people to God. When they sinned against or praised God, it was Aaron who stood before God for them.

When Jesus came, he made all who are His followers priests. Every believer is a priest before God. As a priest, believers have the ability to stand before God on the behalf of other people. The believer is also now the temple of God himself. He can always be in the presence of God.

Each and every day, the believer must bring before God the needs and praises of those he knows. He must remember the names of the people who are in need around him, rather than just focus on his own personal needs, just as Aaron and Jesus had done.

You are a priest of God, if you are a believer. You have direct access to God on behalf of the needs of others. Each and every day, take time to bring the needs of those you know up to God. Carry the names of your friends, family, enemies, and all neighbors on your heart as you go before God. Be the priest of God for the people. God can use you through your prayers.

I pray today that you will know who you are in Jesus; that you will have the names of people on your hearts as you pray to God; that you will lift up the needs of others before God daily; and that God will do many great things through you in others.

Luke 8:30 What Is Your Name?

Lion.jpg

Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. Luke 8:30

The disciples and Jesus had landed at a certain place. A man came up to Jesus shouting. This man had been possessed by many demons. When Jesus asked the man his name, the man said it was Legion. This name means a large number of something.

Every person on the earth has at least one name that they go by. Most people have multiple names, more than just a first, middle and last name, although many do not think of them as other names. Some of these other names are: a nickname, son/daughter, mother/father, aunt/uncle, brother/sister, co-worker, boss, teacher, and the list goes on.

Some of the additional names that people like are: friend, spouse, faithful, loyal, and many others.

However, at the same time that there are many names people like, there are also not-so-good names that people carry. These can be liar, thief, sinner, gossip, lazy, ugly, stupid, and the list also goes on.

These types of names cut a person down. They look at the negative side of the person. In these names there does not seem to be any hope or love being shown.

When a person has chosen to give his life to Jesus, he gets a name change. He is no longer a child of the devil, but a child of the King. His name is changed to Child of God, saved, loved, forgiven, and many others.

The world will remember the person as to who he was, but God sees the person as who he is becoming and can be. As a believer, he is becoming like Jesus.

If you have given your life to Jesus, your name has been changed. You are a new person, a new creation in Christ Jesus your Lord.

There will be times that you may not do the right thing. The devil will try to accuse you and change your name back to an old name. You have to resist the devil and trust in what Jesus did for you. Stay with the name He has given you.

Each day you need to strive to live up to the name God has given you and remember that name. Do not allow this world to bring up the past, that was who you were, but are no longer.

What is your name?

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will know the names God has given you; that you will not believe the lies of this world or the devil; and that you will be a witness of Jesus to this world.

Ezekiel 48:35 The Lord Is There

“The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits. And the name of the city from that time on will be: THE LORD IS THERE.” Ezekiel 48:35

The very last chapter of the book of Ezekiel is a description of the size and dimensions of a new city. This will be the city of God that will last forever. It is where God will dwell with His people and its gates are one for each of the tribes of Israel.

Each city in the world is usually known for something. Los Angeles is known for trolleys, hills, and Hollywood. New York is known for Broadway, the Big Apple, and the Bronx. San Antonio is known for the Alamo and the various missions. Berlin is known for the wall. Rome is known for the Catholic church and the pope. Amsterdam is known for tulips and drugs. Paris is known for art and the waterways. Each one has some things that they are known for that are good, while some things are bad.

Every person who lives on this earth has something that they are known for also. When a person’s name is mentioned, a thought comes to other people’s minds who know that person. Some good things are that the person is generous, or a good singer, or funny, or caring, or a hard worker, or some other thing that brings a smile to others.

Others do not bring a smile to people’s faces when their name is mentioned. They are known for lying, stealing, drugs, cheating and the list goes on also.

As a believer in Jesus, you should be known for something also. When your name is mentioned, it should cause people to think of you as they will talk about the new city–The Lord Is There.

When you accepted Jesus as your Savior and repented of your sins, God made His home in you. He is there to dwell with you forever.

By your actions and words, people will know that God is there with you. They will see His love shining through. They will see His blessings pouring in and through you.  However, this can only happen if you allow God to work in and through you.

As people look at you, what do they see? Do they see just another person, like everyone else?

Or do they see where God dwells?

I pray today that you will allow God to live in you; that you will allow God to work through you; that God will shine in your life; and that people will see Jesus in you.

Numbers 1:2 God Knows His People

“Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.” Numbers 1:2

The book of numbers is a book that list a lot of genealogies. It contains some very long lists of the names of many different families. It begins with God telling Moses to take a census of all the men in the entire community, naming each one directly. At this time there is around a million people. This would take some time to do.

Many people who read the book of Numbers like to skip over the genealogies. The lists are long in reading who is the son of who over and over, or they list who is the father of who over and  over. One may wonder why God put these long, boring lists in the Bible to be read.

In doing these lists God is showing His direct personal concern over the people. He knows each person by name. Each of those men had a part in God’s plan for the nation of Israel. Most of those men probably saw themselves as just a person with no real importance. They worked hard to provide for their families and do what they were told to do. Yet, God saw fit to place their names in His Word for all eternity.

Men, and women, today are no different. You probably see yourself as just a man or woman who is striving to provide for your family or future family. You don’t see yourself as very important. You don’t have some big ministry in the church. Your name is not in the limelight.

Yet, God knows your name. He has you counted in His book of life for all eternity. You have great importance to Him. Remember that God sent Jesus to die for you. He has a purpose for you. It may be something little or something great, but it is His work and it is important.

Make sure God knows your name by following Jesus. Accept what Jesus has done for you, so that your name will be in God’s Book of Life. Do not see yourself as just a nobody. You are a child of God in a great kingdom that will never end.

I pray today that God will reveal His plans for you; that you will know that you are God’s child; that your name will be in God’s book; and that you will know you have great value to God.

Luke 8:30 What Is Your Name

“Jesus asked him, ‘What is your name?’ ‘Legion,’ he replied, because many demons had gone into him.” Luke 8:30

The disciples and Jesus had landed in the area of the Gerasenes. In that area a man was living alone that was demon possessed. No one could control the man at all because of the demons.

Jesus asked the man what his name was. The man gave the name of “Legion”. The reason for that name was that there were many demons living inside the man. The word “legion” means many people. His name described who he was.

Afterwards, Jesus cast the demons out of the man. He became a follower of Jesus and went to his home town telling everyone what God had done for him.

In the United States, names do not usually carry the weight of meaning for a person that it did in Biblical times. Some people do name their children with the meaning of the name in mind, but many do not.

However, everyone can have other names that describe who they are. Parents are called “Mom” and “Dad”. Those in authority at work are called “Managers” or “Supervisors”.

You have specific names for who you are also. Each person is somewhat different in their names.

Some names that every follower of Jesus has are that of “Child of God”, and “Anointed One”. Every believer has become a co-heir with Jesus, so they are also a child of God. Every believer has been filled with God’s Holy Spirit, so he is also anointed.

What does this mean for you today? It shows who you are and who you belong to.

The man in the reading today held the name “Legion” because he was controlled by a legion of demons. Who are you controlled by? Who is inside of you?

If you are a “Child of God”, you have everything God has. You have His characteristics, looks, appearance, and favor. Live your life with this in mind. Do not live like the world, but like Jesus. Live up to the name that you have been given.

I pray today that God will reveal His names for you; that you will live your life as a child of God; that God will reveal His plans for your life; and that God will build His kingdom through you.
