Job 41:1-2 What Can YOU Really Do?

Crocodile

Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope? Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook? Job 41:1-2

Being independent and able to do things is what most people want to be able to do. Children are constantly told that they can do whatever their heart wants to do, that they can be whatever they want to be. This can happen with hard work and dedication.

As people grow up being taught this, most people feel as if they do not need anyone else’s help, that they are completely independent of others, able to do it themselves. While being able to do things is true, it is not true that man can do anything and everything. Nor is it true that man is completely independent of anyone else.

As God is speaking to Job, He asks Job about the Leviathan. He wants to know if Job can hold the Leviathan down. Later in this chapter God gives a great description of the power and abilities of the Leviathan and wants to know if Job can control it. It is implied that Job cannot control it, but that God can.

There are limits to what man can do on his own. In reality man cannot do anything without God. It is God who gave the breath of life into each and every person on this earth. It is God who sustains all life on this earth.

Without God’s help, man could not survive at all. This means God is the one in complete control. Knowing this, every believer must release control to God and trust God in any and every situation that occurs in his life. This includes the ‘bad’ situations in life, as well as the good ones.

You may be able to do many things in this life. You may have a successful career and a great family, but there is still a limit to what you can do. And what you have done, has been done with the abilities God has given you.

Just as it takes Jesus to remove sins out of your life, it takes God and His power to do anything in this life. He is the One who had created you and is the One who will sustain you.

Allow God to be in control and trust Him through every situation in your life. He can control the Leviathan in your life.

I pray today that you will know God’s power in your life; that you will give God complete authority over your life; that you will trust God’s work in your life; and that you will not try to be in control of your whole life.

1 Corinthians 11:11 No One Is Independent

man and woman

Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 1 Corinthians 11:11

Paul had been talking about the place of men and women in Christ. It is common for men to remember the statement Paul made that men are under Christ and women are under men.

People all over the world, both men and women, often feel that they do not need the other in their life. For many years, there are groups of women striving to be independent of men, and men trying to be independent of women.

One group feels superior to the other and don’t really need each other. While it may be or may not be true that both can do things equally well, it is not true that they do not need each other. There will always be things that a woman can do that a man cannot do, as well as there will be things that a man can do that a woman cannot do. The very minimum thing that can be seen in the need of each other is that woman came from man, but man is born from a woman.

When God created Eve, He made her to be a helpmate to Adam. This shows that man needed the woman.

While the majority of people who feel the need of independence from each other are people outside the church, there are also many inside the church that feel the same way. Some will try to do things without the other or will cut down the work of the other.

Men and women who are believers need to learn that they can help each other be the best that they can be. They both can learn from each other. A woman will have insights into some things that the man cannot see and the same for a man will have insights into some things that the woman cannot see. God uses both to build each other up in Jesus.

Take a look at the value of men or women in your life. Regardless of which one you are, you need the other. The other can bring valuable insight and help into your life. Each can help you be built up in Christ in different ways and areas of your life.

If you are a man, you need a woman in your life. If you are woman, you need a man in your life.

I pray today that Jesus will be the head of your life; that you will know the value of others in your life; that you will be a support and builder with Christ of others in your life; and that you will work with others to build the kingdom of Jesus.

Independence Versus Dependence

Fourth of July is a time in America in which people celebrate the independence of America. It celebrates when the young nation had broken away from England to become its own country. They did not want to be controlled by or depend upon any other nation in the world. This new country wanted to be self-sufficient, self-sustaining–independent.

Parents push their children for independence. Once a child gets past the initial baby stage, they strive to work with their child to gain independence. The child learns to hold the bottle himself. Later the child is taught how to walk without holding a hand. Learning to eat with a spoon and fork is taught.

Learning to be independent does not end as a person grows up. It continues as an adult. People have to learn how to work a job and manage their money so that they can live on their own. Most do not want to be dependent upon others to supply their needs and desires.

While it is good to be able to work on your own and provide for your own needs, it is not totally correct.

Just working a job for money, means you are dependent upon someone else. You are dependent upon the boss providing the job with a paycheck. You are dependent upon people purchasing the services of  your boss, so that he can provide the job and the paycheck. You are dependent upon the job that the people have that purchase the services that of your boss so that he can provide you a job and a paycheck. And the connection goes on indefinitely.

No one can really survive completely independent of anyone else. The person who lives alone deep in a forest is still dependent upon others to some degree. Most likely he has a gun or a frying pan that he did not make himself. He relied on someone else to make. He was dependent upon that other person.

Most people will not try to live alone in the forest and may say that this illustration does not apply to them. How many people drive a vehicle to work? Each person that does, is dependent upon those who made the vehicle. They are dependent upon those who made and maintain the roads.

The ultimate dependence a person can have is on God. While people can provide some things and can meet some of the needs of a person, only God can provide absolutely everything. He is the One who gives each person the ability to provide something for someone else. He is the One who provides the materials for anyone to make anything.

Think about it, without God there would be no earth or air. Without the earth or air, you could not exist. God provides the very air you breath and the ground you walk on.

God gave you life when you were born. He breathed life into the body you are now using on this earth.

While independence sounds good, it is not a reality. Everyone is dependent upon someone else. No person is truly independent of anyone else, whether they allow God into the picture of their life or not.

Believers know that they are supposed to be dependent upon God for everything. However, many do not live in that dependence. Many try to do things on their own, and only when it gets really ugly do they cry out to God for help and guidance.

How many times do you try to do something on your own, and then after you fail, you pray to God for His help and favor?

It is easy to think that you can do it. That is the way the world has trained you to think. And there is actually an element of truth in saying that you can do it. You can do all things. However, do not forget the reason why you can do all things. It is because God is with you.

In Christ Jesus you can do all things, because it is He who gave you the ability and power to do them. Again, you are dependent upon Jesus, it is not your own doing or power.

Rely on God to give you the strength, wisdom, and power to do what needs to be done. Do this for everything you do. Live this way each day.

Without God you really cannot do anything. As you rely upon Jesus for your forgiveness of sin and your salvation, so also rely on Him to provide you for your daily needs and guidance.

God is there for you and is not kicking you out to have you be independent. He is not raising you up to be independent. He wants you to be dependent upon Him.

As you celebrate, if you live in America, the independence day of America, remember that you, and America, are still dependent upon others. Keep your dependence upon God, the only One who has absolute power in this world.

1 Corinthians 11:11 Mutual Dependence

“Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 1 Corinthians 11:11

After pointing out that man has authority over woman, Paul quickly points out that neither man nor woman is independent of the other. Man needs woman, just as much as woman needs man. Over both of them is God, the ultimate authority.

In many parts of the world, the independence of woman is praised. America is highly praised for the independence of women and what they can accomplish. Since the early 1970’s women have tried more and more to prove that they can work independent of men. They try to show that anything a man can do in the workplace or at play, they can do. In the current days this has been taken even further with marriage and raising children.

However, as a believer in the Lord Jesus, this type of thinking should not occur. Yes, woman came from man, but a man is born from a woman. When God created Adam, He decided that Adam would need someone to help him, that is why He created Even, to be a help-mate.

Men and women need to work together, building each other up. In Jesus there is no competition. All have equally sinned against God. All are saved only by faith in Jesus by the grace of God. It does not matter if you are a man or a woman.

Previously it has been shown that you should work at serving others. You are to put other people first. This includes men and women. Each should be putting the other first. Build each other up.

It does not matter if you are married or are still single. Each person needs the other person in some way or the other. Do not be like the world and try to be the boss of another. Work at being a servant to others, both men and women, as Jesus was and is.

Point each other to Jesus and strive to be more like Jesus every day. Seek God on how you need to be dependent on the other. You need each other to fulfill God’s plan for your life.

I pray today that God will reveal to you ways to serve others; that you will see how you are dependent on others; that God will give you strength to not be the boss of others; and that you with all men and women will grow in the Lord Jesus together.
