Psalm 62:1 Finding Rest

Fox resting

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Psalm 62:1

Rest is something that most people desire, but are unable to find. Running from morning until night, seven days a week, people struggle to find rest.

Rest becomes elusive because of the race that people are in to try and satisfy their soul. They fear rejection, poverty, looking bad, and missing out so they run harder to prevent those things from occurring. When they lie down at night, their minds race in fear for the next day trying to determine how to make something happen or to keep moving forward, thus not getting any rest.

The goals of people are for temporary happiness and enjoyment, but often these are missing in the race. People miss out on life striving to run hard after false things, false hopes and false dreams.

David was a person who had to run, both physically and in what he had to do. Many times he was running from an enemy, and other times he was busy running a nation as the king. During it all he found rest in God. He realized that salvation came from God alone.

Every believer needs to realize that it is God who is the true provider for every need he has. Provision for physical, spiritual and emotional needs. There is nothing that God cannot supply.

Instead of looking to the temporary things that this world can provide, one must look to God for the eternal things. The things that last are forgiveness, love, peace, joy, kindness, mercy, patience, and God’s presence. When a believer has God at the center of his life, he will know the rest that God provides. This will allow him to lie down at night in peace and sleep knowing God is in control and will save him in the end.

You may be one who is struggling to find rest. Rest seems to elude you every where you look. Instead of searching for it with the things of this world, seek God and His presence in your life.

Allow God to have complete control in your life and see Him work His hand of provision and salvation in your life. God can give you a peace and rest in the middle of the greatest storms in your life. His rest will allow you to sleep and renew your strength to that of an eagle or a horse.

I pray today that you will know the salvation God provides; that you will know God’s presence in your life; that God will fill your heart and soul with His rest and peace; and that you will find rest in God alone.

Matthew 11:29 How To Get Some Rest

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29

Jesus started talking to the disciples about finding some rest. He tells them that the way to do it is take up His yoke and learn from Him. In that way they would find the rest that they are seeking.

Wanting rest is something most people are searching for. They want to be able to slow down and get some rest, while ensuring everything gets done that needs to be done. Yet, in the process of seeking rest, very few are finding it.

People like to relax and rest in various ways. Many take up some type of hobby to find their rest, others will just sleep. Others will take some type of drug to help them calm down and rest. In all of these ways, most are not finding what they really desire for rest.

Jesus had a yoke for the disciples to take up and carry. This meant that they would not have to carry it alone. He would be right along side of them carrying the weight of it with them. The yoke that Jesus wanted them to carry was to follow and trust Him for salvation and be a witness to this world. His purpose in life was to save all people from their sins.

Prior to Jesus, people had to follow the law perfectly and hope that they were going to be saved. Many today are seeking various religions and hoping that they will live a better afterlife. As they strive to follow the OT law and other religions, they are restless. They cannot find the peace and rest they are searching for, because it is not in Jesus.

There is only one way to heaven and that is through Jesus. You have to trust Him fully for your salvation. Then you must do what He came to do, seek the lost out for God. Jesus found strength and rest in doing what the Father wanted Him to do. You can find the same strength and rest also in doing the Father’s will.

Being a witness is not hard work. Following Jesus is not hard work. And both will bring the needed rest for your soul. You will not be fighting for salvation, but resting in it.

I pray today that you will know the salvation Jesus provides; that you will do the work God has for you to do; that you will have peace and rest in your soul; and that you will be a witness to this world for Jesus.

Rest…What Is That?

In today’s society everything needs to be done as fast as possible. No matter how fast a computer is, it needs to be just a little bit faster. No matter how high the speed limit is, people want to drive faster. Meals at a restaurant can never seem to get to the table fast enough.

With all of the things going on in life people get tired and want to rest. Rest is something most people want, but can never seem to find. The busyness of life seems to bog people down and keep them from ever getting enough rest.

I have to go to work, clean the house, do the dishes, wash the car, pay the bills, drive kids to the school, teach my kids, mow the yard, weed the garden, go grocery shopping, and the list goes on forever of what needs to be done.

Along with all of the needs that need to be done, there are the things I want to do, watch a tv show or movie, go on a date with my wife, read a book, play a game with my kids, watch a game, do a hobby, and the list goes on.

You have your list of things that need to be done and the things you want to do. With all of these things you want to find some rest, but cannot seem to find it ever.

Rest comes from the correct perspective of life. After God made the heavens and the earth in six days, He rested. Ever since then God has been running this world, yet He never needs a day off to rest. He finds His rest in the joy of doing what He is doing.

As a human being you need to get your focus on God and what He wants for your life. God had set up the rule to work six days, and rest on the Sabbath. The day of Sabbath was to be one of no work at all, not even cooking.

David said, Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Psalm 62:1-2

David found his rest in God and in God alone. People often try to find their rest in doing more. They want a vacation and end up running harder on vacation than at work.

You need to stop and find time to be with God. Allow God to hold you in His arms and bring you the needed rest. This is just like a little baby being held by his mother. He finds comfort and rest in His mother’s arms.

Jesus said, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29

Often we put burdens on ourselves and wear ourselves out by them. We feel we have to do much more than what is really needed and get worn out. Most people have a hard time saying no.

You are to go to Jesus with all of the details of your life. Allow God to guide your steps. His burden for you will be light compared to what you will put on yourself.

When you are trusting in God for all of your needs and desires, you will rest better. You will be able to go to sleep without worrying about tomorrow. You will have a peaceful sleep and get the needed rest.

When you stop and spend time with God, it will remove the burdens and stress of this world.

This does not have to be hours in a day everyday, but some time each and every day. You may even stop several times a day for a few minutes to rest in God. Stop and breath in the breath of God into your busy life. Allow God to slow down your heart rate and be at rest.

God wants you to rest. That rest is only found in Him. The world will give you more and more to do, and tell you need to do even more.

I trust that in the days to come you will find your rest in God. Find that rest that you have been searching for and get the renewed strength that you need to do the things God wants you to do.
