Joshua 24:16 Easy Made Promises

Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods!” Joshua 24:16

Promises are something that are easy to make, but more difficult to keep. Everyday people make many different promises in hundreds of different ways and then in a very short time break those promises.

Often promises are made in the hype and excitement of the moment, when everything is looking perfect with no difficulties. The more people involved, the easier they are to make. Then later, when difficulties arise, the promises are forgotten and broken out of convenience.

After conquering the land, Joshua reminds the Israelites of all that God had done and that he will still serve God. Then he challenges the people to serve God. The people promise to never forsake God and serve false gods.

In church settings or large group settings of groups of believers, it is common for challenges to serve God to be made. It is built up with excitement of choosing to serve God with one’s whole life and a push for commitment. Nearly everyone is quick to dedicate themselves to God.

Just like the Israelites, however, after leaving the church and meeting, people are back in the world and forget all about God. Focus is taken off of God and back on self, serving other gods of this world, pride, selfishness, alcohol, porn, money, and many other things.

The world will put pressure on the believer to forsake God and follow their false gods. Promises of pleasure and ease are made that will only bring about death and misery.

True believers will keep their focus upon God and remember their promises to serve Him alone. When temptation arises to cause them to forsake God, they will resist the devil and flee the temptation, rather than give in to it. They will not take their promise lightly.

Have you made a commitment to serve God and Him alone in your life? Do not allow the things and cares of this world distract you so that you forsake God and begin to serve the false, dead gods of this world.

Commit your whole life to God and seek His strength to fulfill that promise. God will give you everything you need to serve Him with all of your life. Trust in Him alone as you keep your promise to serve Him.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will commit your life to serving God alone; that God will give you strength to resist serving other false gods; and that God will fill you with His Holy Spirit to guide and direct your steps.

Numbers 28:3 A Daily Sacrifice To God

Say to them: This is the food offering you are to present to the Lord: two lambs a year old without defect, as a regular burnt offering each day. Numbers 28:3

When people desire to have something, they will often be very willing to sacrifice something else to get it. The desire may be for some object, a position, a title or nearly anything else. The sacrifice offered may be time, money, friendship, food, or nearly anything else.

How much a person is willing to offer as a sacrifice depends upon how much the person really wants that item.

God told the people that there had to be a burnt food offering of two lambs without defect offered each day as a sacrifice.

Food is something that every person needs every day to survive. Some need a lot of food, while others not as much, but everyone needs food. Giving up food is difficult for most people because of the desire for it and the physical need for it.

Unlike the Israelites, believers no longer have to offer food sacrifices to God, because of Jesus being the one sacrifice for all. However, every believer still needs to make a sacrifice to God every day.

Instead of offering a food sacrifice, the believer must be willing to sacrifice himself to God on a daily basis. This sacrifice is offering to God his entire life, his thinking, actions, reactions, abilities, words…everything. He is to place himself upon the altar of sacrifice and allow his life to be burnt up, dying to self, sin and this world for God to use in His way.

Jesus has already taken away all the sin, making the believer a perfect sacrifice unto the Father. God can do great things in and through the one who offers his life as a sacrifice before Him each day.

As a believer the greatest thing you can give to God is yourself. Allow yourself to die daily on the altar before God.

Place God and His desires above your life, regardless of the cost. The reward of sacrificing your life to God is that God gives you back an abundant and eternal life that will far surpass anything this world can offer. Nothing this world can offer can match what God will give you.

Trust God with your entire life daily and see what God can and will do.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will trust God with your whole life; that you will sacrifice your will and desires to God each day; and that you will see God work in and through you great wonders.

Leviticus 8:30 Getting Set Apart

Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments. Leviticus 8:30

The majority of the world does not like to be separated or set apart. Most people like to blend in and be a part of the crowd.

Some like to be set apart as rebels to fight against the system or to draw attention to themselves. A few like to be separate in order to do great things.

Moses sprinkled Aaron and his sons and their clothing with blood from the altar and anointing oil to set them apart unto God.

While the majority of the world loves to be a part of the crowd, believers are to be set apart, consecrated unto God. They are to be different than the world. As the world seeks to live for the moment in sin and self-pleasure, believers are focused upon God and eternity.

This separation unto God begins when the believe in Jesus, repent of their sins and are washed with the blood of Jesus being forgiven. Sin no longer maintains control over their life as the world does.

Once they are consecrated by the blood of Jesus, then they can be anointed by the oil of God, His Holy Spirit. Doing this gives them the power to do God’s work and to remain separate from the world. It breaks the bonds of sin and this world upon their lives.

Believers are to look and act like Jesus, different from the world. They are a unique and peculiar people that are sold out and dedicated to God for His glory and for His use.

Just as Aaron and his sons were consecrated and dedicated to God, so were you the moment you chose to believe in Jesus. The blood of Jesus was poured out on you to get rid of your sins. God’s Holy Spirit was placed in you to set you apart from the world and sin.

Do not allow yourself to continue to look and act like the world. Be separate from the world and sin. Act and look more like Jesus every day, dedicated and sold out to God with your whole life.

Are you consecrated, separated unto God, apart from this world?

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will have your sins washed in the blood of Jesus; that you will be anointed by the Holy Spirit; that you will be set apart to do the work God has for you; and that you will look more like Jesus than the world.

2 Chronicles 31:5 Generous Giving To Worship

As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the firstfruits of their grain, new wine, olive oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything. 2 Chronicles 31:5

Hezekiah had the temple cleaned up and consecrated to God, and all the places of false worship were destroyed. It was now ready for worship to begin. After appointing the priests for leading the worship, he put out an order telling the people to give to the temple for worship. The people generously brought in a great supply of everything needed for worship to God.

During the time of Hezekiah worship was something that was physical and cost a great deal to do. Many animals and foods had to be used in the process of sacrifices in order to worship God properly. The people would show their worship to God by bringing those needed items to the temple to be used in the sacrifices.

Since Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice for every person, the method of worship has changed. While animals are no longer needed for sacrifices to worship, there are other things needed, some physical and some spiritual.

For the physical side of things it does cost money to have the sound equipment and a building in which to gather to worship. This is where physical tithing and generously giving of money comes in.

The other important factor in worship is the spiritual. A heart dedicated to God is required to be able to worship God. Taking time out of a busy life schedule is needed to worship God. Focusing on God and forgetting the cares of this world is needed to worship God. Gathering with other believers helps build the worship to God.

These are all things that only you can provide for yourself. As you gather with other believers for worship what are you putting into that offering of worship?

Have you tithed the money needed for expenses?

Are you dedicating your whole life and mind to worshipping God?

Take some time today to generously pour out some worship to God. Step off the crazy tread-mill of life to focus on God and give Him some worship. Go above and beyond just a five-minute quick worship and give it all to Him, Jesus is worth all you can give and more.

I pray today that you will make time to worship God; that you will set aside personal needs to worship God; that you will enter into a close relationship with Jesus; and that you will be generous in your worship to God in every area of your life.

1 Kings 11:4 Bad Influences

As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been. 1 Kings 11:4

Over the years Solomon had married several hundred women, many of whom were from foreign nations. These women were from nations that God had told the Israelites not to marry anyone. These wives brought with them their foreign gods and influenced Solomon into following those gods. He did not have a heart that was fully devoted to God alone.

Nobody likes to be left out of a group. People everywhere like to fit in with those they are with. Being left out gives the feeling that one is different or missing out on something fun.

It is a well-known fact that if a person hangs around another person or group of people enough, that the habits will transfer over. Often it is bad habits that will transfer, rather than the good ones.

Parents will often keep their children from hanging around certain other children, because they see them as a bad influence. They want their children influenced for the good, rather than the bad.

Yet, many adults will spend all their time with those who are not living correctly for God. Often it is around a person claiming to be a believer, but still living directly in a sinful lifestyle on purpose. They become a bad influence on the true believer.

You need to take a look at who you spend the majority of your time with. Are those people lifting you up and pointing you closer to God?

Or are they being a bad influence, pulling you away from God?

The peer pressure of a bad influence does not just affect children, it affects adults also.

As a believer, you need to be the one to influence the world for Jesus, not the other way around.

I pray today that God will give you wisdom on who are good influences around you; that you will be the light of Jesus in this world; that your heart will be focused on God; and that you will not be led astray with bad influences.
