Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8
Very few people are always on alert, expecting danger to occur at any moment. Unless they are in a very dangerous area or outside of the normal area of living, most people feel safe.
Although things can appear to be safe, danger can come very suddenly and from unexpected locations, if one is not aware of what is going on around them. A person must always be on alert when he is driving down the road, to be ready for anything that could possibly go wrong.
As Peter is closing his letter, he gives a warning to the believers to be alert and sober, because the devil is going around like a lion seeking to destroy someone.
During times, when everything is going good, it is easy for a believer to get lulled into a sleep thinking that everything is good and nothing bad will occur. Just as a driver going down a long, straight road for hours will get drowsy, believers will often get drowsy and not pay attention to his surroundings.
Many people think of the devil in a red suit that looks ugly. In reality, the devil comes disguised in many things to devour a believer. He comes as a ‘good’ friend, a co-worker, a little child, a magazine, a picture, the internet and many other ways. He comes both inside and outside the church as little temptations to sin against God.
The devil is doing whatever it takes to destroy the believer.
The easiest way to stop the devil is to be aware and resist him. The only way to do this is to be aware and of a sober mind, not caught up in the temporary things of this world.
Satan is out to destroy you. Keep your eyes focused on God and allow His Holy Spirit to keep you aware of what the tactics of the devil are.
God can reveal when the devil is making an attack against you and will show you a way of escape. Instead of walking into temptation and being devoured, resist the devil and flee. Do not give the devil a chance to win the battle.
Put your trust in God, stay alert being led by the Holy Spirit and He will protect you.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that God will open your eyes to the tactics of the devil; that you will be aware of the deception of the enemy; that you will be led by the Holy Spirit; that God will protect you during times of attack; and that your mind will be focused upon God and His eternal things.
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13
Security guards have a job that must be done to protect someone or a given place or thing. As they are doing their job, they must be alert at all times as to what is going on around them. They must also be filled with courage and strength to face possible dangers.
Depending upon what a guard is guarding, will depend upon on how dangerous his position is. The higher and greater the value, the greater the chance is of someone trying to steal or destroy it.
As Paul finishes out this first letter to the Corinthian church, he tells them to be on their guard with a firm, strong faith that is full of courage.
While the world has many things that have great value that must be guarded, the believer has something that has greater value than anything the world can offer. The believer has forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
There is no price tag that can be put on how valuable life is. Most people are willing to stand strong to guard their life. Very few are willing to die. The world strives to hold on to what they call life, but which is in reality, death.
Every believer has been forgiven of his sins and give eternal life. Yet, many believers do not guard the life that has been given them. They are willing to play with sin and live in fear. The enemy of their souls is allowed to intimidate them. They have very little courage to stand strong upon God’s word and promises.
Every believer must be aware that the enemy is out to destroy him. He must stand firm on what Jesus has done and be very bold and courageous. In the end he will win, if he holds on to his faith and is bold.
The enemy of your soul is out to get you. The world does not want you, as a believer, to win. Fill your mind with God’s word and believe it. Know that you know God’s word is true for you.
As you know God’s word for your life, keep alert, watching out for the attacks of the enemy upon your mind and life. Be willing to stand strong for God, pushing the attacks of the enemy away.
God is with you and will protect you as you trust in Him and stand strong for Him.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that God will help you be alert to the tactics of the enemy; that you will have the courage God provides; that you will walk in the strength of God; and that you will not give in to the attacks of the enemy.
“Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” Luke 22:46
Sleep is one thing that many people really like and desire more of. When a person is sleeping, he is at rest and all of the problems of the world appear to disappear. Once in a deep sleep, one will often forget about the challenges of the day.
People will even take drugs to help them fall asleep to get away from the stress they are under. Facing the problems is rejected for the peaceful sleep in a world of dreams.
As Jesus was preparing to be crucified He went into a garden to pray with some of His disciples. He asked them to pray. When they fell asleep, He told them they need to pray to keep from falling into temptation.
Just as the world desires to sleep away the problems of their day, many in the church get weary and have gone to sleep. Instead of praying for strength to overcome temptation, they turn the other way and go to sleep. In their drowsiness many turn to and accept sin as a normal part of their lives.
Whole churches have fallen asleep, rejecting God’s word and allowing sin to be actively practiced and promoted inside the church. They have fallen into the temptation presented for them.
Both individual believers and churches are living in a way that does not set them separate from the world, but a part of the world.
Every believer needs to be awake and alert in prayer, keeping watch out for the evil temptations of Satan in their lives. Their prayers need to be ones of asking God for wisdom, direction and strength to accomplish His will–to be like Jesus.
As you examine your life, does it show that you have fallen asleep and allowed sin into your life? Any sin that you have chosen to accept as normal is against God.
God is right there with you, giving you His Holy Spirit to strengthen and guide you in His ways. He does not want you to fail and fall into temptation and makes a way out of it every time. However to overcome temptation, you must be willing to stay awake and pray to know how to overcome it.
Are you awake and praying? Or are you asleep?
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will be awake and alert to the evil ways of this world; that you will pray as Jesus prayed; that you will be guided by God’s Holy Spirit to flee all temptation.
