Mark 13:33 Be Alert

Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. Mark 13:33

Jesus had just told the disciples of things yet to come, times of disaster and change. After all these things happen is when Jesus would return. No one knows when He will return, but only that it will happen. He now warns them to stay alert for His return.

Waiting for something to happen can be very frustrating for a lot of people. They know that something is going to happen, but they just do not know when it will happen.

Some of these things can be good things. Such as knowing when a certain check will come in the mail. Or when a baby will be born. Or when a person will ask the question of proposal for marriage. People look forward to these things with a lot of anticipation and excitement.

Other things can be coming that people do not look forward to happening. Things such as a death of a loved one. Or the bill that will come in the mail. Or a bad storm that is coming through, that could cause a lot of damage.

Things that people look forward to, keep their eyes open and they stay alert for the event to happen. The greater the event, the more alert they will remain, because they do not want to miss it. How many people will camp out at a store waiting for some hot new item to go on sale the next morning?

Those who don’t know Jesus will not look forward to His return at all.

The greatest event to happen is the return of Jesus. Those who have chosen to follow Him, have nothing greater to look forward too. It will be the greatest event in all of their life.

As a believer, you must be looking forward to His return. You must be ready for His return. This means that you are living for Him and following Him with all of your life right now.

Do not allow yourself to go to sleep and stop watching and living for Him. Do not allow yourself to go back into this world and live like the world, not caring about Jesus. If you do, you may miss out on the greatest event in all of your life for all eternity.

Remain alert, living for Jesus and waiting for Him.

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will be watching for His return; that you will be living for Jesus with your whole life; and that you will tell others of Jesus.

1 Peter 4:7 Alert And Sober

“The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.” 1 Peter 4:7

After Peter talks about how the world will live in sin and the believer is not to live that way, he brings up the end being near. He was there when Jesus had left the earth and had stated that He would return soon. Peter is most likely thinking that Jesus will be showing up any day now. Now that it is nearly 2,000 years later, how much closer is that end?

Keeping in mind that the end is near, he tells believers to be alert and of a sober mind.

Being alert is knowing what is going on around you. It is easy to be awake and see stuff, but it is different to know what is actually going on. Turn on the news and you can see what is happening around the world. However, that is just the surface of what is happening.

A good example is watch a movie with a good sounding story line on the surface. Underlining that story is the desire to promote some particular sinful habit as acceptable. One who is alert will see that subliminal message being promoted.

Along with being alert, one must also be sober. This is thinking with a clear mind. It is easy to let the moment cloud the real truth. Peter had also talked about going through suffering as a good thing. One who is not sober will only see the challenges and suffering as bad. The one who is sober will see that God is in control and has a reason for the suffering to be allowed.

Living this way will allow you to pray correctly. You will be able to pray God’s will in every situation. When you see the news, you will know what really needs to be prayed for.

Stay focused in God’s Word and in prayer. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Be filled with His Holy Spirit. These are ways to keep you alert and sober. It will change how you see things and how you pray.

I pray today that God will open your eyes to what He is doing; that you will see the deception of the world; that you will be filled with God’s Spirit; that God will help you to pray His will and desire; and that you will live according to God’s ways and be His witness.

Mark 14:38 Stopping Temptation

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Mark 14:38

Jesus was getting ready to be betrayed and crucified. He went into the garden to spend some time in pray. He told the disciples to pray also. When He came back from praying for an hour He found the disciples asleep. Then He speaks today’s verse.

Jesus states there are two things that a person must do to keep from falling into temptation. The first is to watch.

When a person is watching, he is alert to what is going on around him. He knows when there is trouble starting to occur.

As you watch you will see when temptation starts to arise. You will know trouble when it arrives. At that point you have the ability to turn and flee from it.

If you are not watching you will not see it coming and will fall into temptation and sin.

The second thing stated was to pray. When a person prays, his focus is on God. All of his attention is directed towards God.

When your attention is focused on God, you will not focus on yourself and sinful habits. You will not be looking at the world and what the world has to offer.

During times of prayer, God can fill you with His Holy Spirit to give you strength to turn away from all sin. God can reveal to you ways to get away from the temptations being presented.

Most believers will easily state that they do not want to sin. Their hearts desire is in the right place, but their sinful self gets in the way. Most will fall to the desires of the flesh–sin.

God is Spirit. Your spirit needs to be in tune with God’s Spirit to walk the correct path. Allow your spirit to stay aligned with God’s Spirit. Allow God’s Spirit in you to control your flesh and desires.

Do not allow yourself to fall into temptation. Stay awake and alert and focused on God. Allow God to help you flee from temptation. Do not fall into temptation’s snare.

I pray today that God will keep you alert and watching; that you will stay focused on God; that you will pray continually; and that God will give you strength to flee all temptation.

1 Peter 4:7 Be Alert

“The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.” 1 Peter 4:7

Nearly 2,000 years ago Jesus left the earth stating He would be back soon. He also said there would be signs to showing when the time was near. Many of those signs have been fulfilled. If 2,000 years ago Jesus would be back soon, how much sooner will it be today?

With the end of all things being near, Peter now tells you to be alert and of sober mind. Why should you need to be alert? What does it mean to be alert? Alert is being aware of what is going on around you. When a person is driving down the road he needs to be alert to other drivers, wild animals, weather conditions, and his own vehicle condition. If he does not pay attention to all these details, something disastrous could happen.

In the Christian walk, you need to be aware of what the world is doing around you. What does the world say about Jesus? About God? About believers? Along with knowing what is happening in the world, you need to be alert to what God is doing around you. Are you moving on the same path that God is? Are you reaching those God is working to reach through you?

If you are not alert, the world will bring a surprise upon you that you did not see coming. If you are not alert, you will stray from the path God has placed you on.

Along with being alert, Peter tells you to be of a sober mind. When a person sees all the garbage going on in the world (wars, murders, thefts, suicides, etc.) he may get scared. One can go into a panic attack wondering how he will survive the garbage. As a believer in Jesus, you must remember that God will win the war. You are on the winning side. Do not let fear or panic overcome you. Know in your heart God is in control and you will win with Him.

The purpose for all of this is for you to be able to pray. Knowing what is going on will allow you to pray for the world as needed. It will guide you in praying for God’s will. If you are not alert and sober, you will not be able to pray correctly.

I pray that today God will give you His peace of mind; that He will open your eyes to what is happening in the world; that God will reveal to you what He is doing; that God will guide you in praying His will in all things; and that God will use you to build His kingdom.
