Then they said to one another, “We are truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not hear; therefore this distress has come upon us.” Genesis 42:21
Doing something wrong and not getting caught may cause one to feel as if one is in the free and clear, that there will be no consequences at all. Although one may not get physically caught in the wrong, there can be other consequences that can be just as difficult to deal with.
As Joseph was a leader in Egypt his brothers came to Egypt in search of food during a famine. Joseph recognized them and questioned them as spies. His brothers said that their guilt came upon them because of how they treated Joseph in selling him into slavery.
Once a person has done something wrong the conscience is seared with a guilt that does not completely go away. The feeling of guilt can be pushed down, but it will often pop its head back up.
Problems in life will sometimes come due to choices made in the past. Some of these choices are the ones that were bad in doing wrong. When a person is thinking correctly one will begin to see that the current problems may have come from the guilty choice that was once made. Their conscience is hit with their guilt.
Getting past a guilty choice of doing wrong and sinning against God and others is impossible without God getting involved. One must first be willing to admit the guilt. Then one must repent of what was done wrong before God and those the wrong was done against. At that point the guilt can be removed, and the conscience will be clear.
Throughout your life you will sometimes make some bad choices in life. You will be guilty of doing wrong. If you choose not to deal with that guilt it will stay with you and come back to bother you. Make the choice to turn to Jesus and repent of what you have done wrong. Admit your guilt and allow Him to remove it and clear your conscience. Choosing to not do so will cause that guilt to rise up in your life and find you out. It will expose you in the end. Which way would you rather have it?
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will reveal any guilt in your life; that you will repent of all sin; and that God will clear you of any wrongs done, giving you a clean conscience before Him and people.
