After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” Genesis 15:1
Getting a reward is something people love to receive. Rewards are often offered for doing excellent work in the workplace. Sometimes the reward received is extremely nice and worth all the effort. Other times the reward is something very cheap and not worth much at all, often being seen as a joke token from the management. Other places do not really reward anyone for their hard work.
After Abram had rescued Lot in a battle against several kings, God came to Abram and told him to not be afraid because He was his shield and exceedingly great reward.
Soldiers in the military are often awarded with an award recognizing their bravery in battle. They had put themselves on the line to save others and are given a token of honor as a reward. To some it means a lot, while to others it is just a small medal of very little significance.
In this world of sin and evil there will be times in which a believer must put oneself in the path of danger. Some will have to be a witness in places that could cost them their lives. When this occurs, the world does not recognize them. It often goes unseen with no physical reward.
The reward every believer gets is God Himself. He is the believer’s exceedingly great reward. Having God is not something that is temporary or can be taken away by anyone else. He is the reward for eternity. God’s presence can help overcome fear, give one strength and peace that the world cannot know nor understand. That is worth more than anything the world can offer.
You may have done things at work, in your church or community that no one recognizes. No reward has been given for your service. Although that may make you feel as though you are missing out on something, as a believer you have something greater. Having Jesus as your Savior and God as your God is a far greater reward than anyone could ever give you. Realize what you have when you have God as your God and be grateful. With God all things are possible, and you have eternal life and someone with you at all times.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know what you have in God in your life; that you will see the riches of God’s presence in your life; and that you will be content with God alone.
