For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand? Revelation 6:17
Anger can cause people to say and do things that are not normal for them to do and bring it to an all new level. Facing someone else’s anger is then often very difficult to do. The rage of some people can be extremely violent and dangerous for those around them and especially to those whom it is directed at. When a person is in extreme anger things get damaged and people get physically and emotionally harmed.
John describes a day in the future when God begins to take out His wrath against sin and those who sinned against Him. As God is doing this the people recognize that the great day of His wrath had come and are asking who is able to stand it.
The world is very casual and flippant about God and His standards of living. People are bold enough to openly curse God and purposefully live in opposition to Him. Finding ways to sin more and more is the goal of the world not knowing who God really is.
Just as anger builds up in a person over time due to things going against the person, there is anger building up in God against sin. God paid the ultimate price by sending His perfectly innocent Son to die upon the cross to remove all sin. He made a way to stop sinning and yet most people have refused to take that way and continue to sin.
In His patience, God is holding back His anger and wrath against sin and those who sin…for now. There will come a day when He will begin to pour out that wrath upon the earth. When it occurs, only those who are standing right in Jesus will be able to stand before Him, the rest will fall and be destroyed.
You have probably faced someone at some point who was extremely angry. Or you may have been that angry person yourself. That rage and anger will be small compared to the anger God will one day show against sin. Repent of your sin, believe in the work of Jesus and live for God today while you have an opportunity. There will come a day in which God will judge that sin and His wrath against it will be hot. Outside of Jesus, you will not be able to stand before God in that day.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will repent of your sins and follow God with all of your life; that you will be in right standing with God; and that God will not have to pour out His wrath upon you.
