But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Hebrews 5:14
Growing up a person moves from eating baby food to solid food. The larger one grows, the more nutrition one needs to be able to function properly and remain in good health. If one stays on baby food forever, the body will begin to wither up and sickness will set in since it is not getting what it needs.
After pointing out how Christ is the High Priest, the author of Hebrews points out how solid food is what grown believers needs. In using solid food, the word of God, they are able to discern both good and evil.
Eating junk food, that is not good for the body, is popular with most people. It is quick and easy and appears to meet the immediate need. Although, for some, it may taste good in the moment, it does not give the need proper nutrition. Over time it will break down and harm the body.
In the same way, people grab on to things that on the surface look good, but underneath are full of evil. It is caused by a lack of true discernment as to what is good and what is bad for a person.
Rather than eating the deceptive food of the world, believers eat of the word of God. His word guides them in understanding and discerning what is good and evil. It will open one’s eyes up to see the lies and deception that the world presents as good. It then lays out how to do what is good in the eyes of God.
Living this way takes time and exercise in eating the solid food of God’s word.
If you take time to focus on how different physical foods help or harm when eaten, you will be able to learn what is good and bad for you. In this same way there are things in this world that are very harmful to you. Participating in sin will cause death to come, destroying you and killing you in the end.
Put yourself on a diet of eating God’s word each day. Learn to know what is good and bad for you. Allow His word and Holy Spirit to open your eyes to what is good and evil so that you may live a holy life before God.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will have a hunger for God’s word; that God will guide you in discerning both good and evil; that God will give you strength to turn down evil; and that you will do what is right in God’s eyes.
