When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their desire, putting out to sea, they sailed close by Crete. Acts 27:13
Desires are something that every person has. Something is upon their heart that they want. It can be something physical or non-physical for themselves or for someone else. People will seek to have those desires fulfilled. When everything appears to be in position to receive those desires, people will move forward. Sometimes, in the end, getting those desires leads them down a path of trouble that they did not expect, nor want.
In Acts it is recorded that Paul had warned the people not to sail on. When a south wind blew just right, the sailors felt that they had received what they wanted. As a result, later, in a storm, they were shipwrecked.
Getting what wants always feels great in the moment. Everything appears to fall into place and the long-desired moment arrives and the wish is fulfilled. Everything is going perfect.
One example is when a person desires a fancy sports car and is finally able to get it. Once that person has the car, suddenly there is very high insurance and upkeep required to the point the person can no longer afford the dream car.
People aim for their personal desires and goals, rather than following God’s path for their lives. Those desires and goals often come with much pain and problems.
God is able to see what is best for each individual. He is willing to lead and guide every step onto a path that is just right. There will still be problems, but not as great as one choosing one’s own goals.
Rather than following one’s own desires, believers need to be led by God. Doing so can avoid being shipwrecked and stranded for a time.
It is easy for you to choose a path for yourself that gives you the personal desires of your heart. Has there been times in which you chose your own path, only to find it was filled with problems greater than you could ever have imagined?
Do not get caught up in chasing your own desires, but chase after what God has for you. Make a daily choice to follow the path God has for you and accept what He has for you, even when it does not make sense. Following God’s desires will prevent a lot of heartache and shipwrecks in the end.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know God’s desire for your life; that you will follow God’s path for your life; and that you will trust God’s path for your life.
