Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, Acts 17:2
Debates about nearly everything and anything occur all over the world. People, who have their own opinions, will speak up and share those opinions with anyone who is willing to listen. They will then argue those positions with those who don’t agree. Often their opinions are based upon their experience and have no solid backing or foundation that can be easily proven outside of their own feelings. Luke writes in
Acts how Paul would meet in the synagogue with the Jews to reason with them from the Scriptures about Jesus, what He did and why He did it.
It is very easy for a person to claim something that one feels is true. It is completely different to claim something that is true and be able to prove it.
The world is quick to claim many things as true, though they are unable to prove it. Their foundation is often built upon feelings and ideas, rather than upon facts. Blind feelings often guide what people are willing to believe, leading them down paths that are not good.
Throughout the church there are many people who tend to argue belief about God and Jesus from their own feelings. While feelings cannot be completely dismissed, they can easily be wrong.
Rather than debating from personal feelings, believers need to talk about their belief using God’s word, the Scriptures. Backing up what one believes and is saying with Scriptures will give an authority that cannot be easily disputed or ignored.
God’s word is alive and active and will break through to the heart of every person alive and can deal with every situation in life. It is truth that is eternal, not temporary or just a personal belief.
Each day you have opportunities to speak with others about what you feel about various topics. Keep God’s word and truth at the center of what you speak about. Build a foundation on what you say and debate about that is built upon God’s word. Using His word gives you an authority that the world cannot legitimately deny. As you use God’s word, it can break through to the hearts of people and draw them to God. Remember that His words are eternal, while yours are only temporary.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know and apply God’s word in your life; that you will use God’s word in debating any subject in life; and that many will be drawn to Jesus through your use of His word.
