I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist, and baldness on every head; I will make it like mourning for an only son, and its end like a bitter day. Amos 8:10
Partying and having a good time may make a person feel great and that the good times will never end. It is a time when a person is allowed to do what one wants and how one wants to do it, with no apparent consequences. Yet, there are always consequences of doing one’s own thing.
Amos quotes God speaking against Israel that He will turn the feasts into weeping, songs to lamentation, sackcloth for clothes, baldness, mourning as for an only son, and bitterness at the end.
Getting away with something makes a person feel as if one can do anything freely. The world is quick to do what they were born to do–sin against God. Sin shows up in what people do, what they listen to and what they think.
On the outside people appear to be very happy with their lives.
Some of this sin is continued inside the church. It is done as though God does not care and is not watching. Yet, God is watching and does care. Right now, He is allowing sin to take place, but there is a day coming in which He will strike for the sin being done.
When God brings down judgement on people there will be mourning and weeping. He will often strike in this life so that a person may not have to live with eternal condemnation after death. It is done to give a person the chance to turn back to Him.
Rather than stay in sin, a person needs to turn to God and live according to His ways, fleeing all sin.
Sin is all around you and the world strives to get you to participate in that sin. At each temptation you have a choice to make–sin or flee the sin. It may appear to be fun and free to sin, but God will judge you in the end.
Instead of sinning against God, turn to Him and follow His ways. Do not bring the judgement of God down upon you but bring His blessings by obeying His word. Live for God and receive the abundant life He has for you.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will give you strength to flee all sin; that God will not have to bring judgement upon you; and that your life will be filled with the joy of God.
