“Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed; nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time I punish them, they shall be cast down,” says the Lord. Jeremiah 6:15
Shame is something that no one really wants to feel. It is painful and embarrassing to know and realize that one has done something wrong and was caught in it. Instead of shame causing people to change, many have chosen to no longer be ashamed of what they do, whether right or wrong.
Jeremiah quotes God stating that the people were not even ashamed when they committed abominations, sins, against Him. As a result, God said they would be cast down.
The world has no standards to live by other than to live life, be happy and be well fed. Life is to just be a great big party and anything goes as long as self is happy. As a result, the world will do extremely great sins against God, with no remorse or shame. It is a part of who they are.
While this can be expected in the world, this attitude is also often seen inside the church. Sinful activities have become so common place inside the church, that many, who claim to be believers, are no longer ashamed of those sins. Adultery, gossip, cheating, abortion, drunkenness, drugs, abuse, sexual immorality, stealing and nearly every other type of sin is seen inside the church among “believers”. People are afraid to speak out against sin and very few are ashamed of sin anymore.
Believers need to have the heart of God and hate all sin. They need to flee it and be ashamed before God when they slip up and sin against Him and be willing to repent immediately. Sin must not be embraced, nor accepted.
There are most likely times in your life in which you did something that you were ashamed of. If the shame did its job, you chose to no longer do what was bad or wrong. If it did not, you learned to overcome that shame and continued to do wrong.
Do not allow yourself to get that way with sin. Hate sin as much as God hates it. Be ashamed when you fail God and sin, but then be quick to repent and turn from the sin. God is ready to forgive and build you up, not tear you down.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will be ashamed of your sin before God; that you will repent of all sins before God; and that God will guide you in fleeing all sin in your life.
