Do no add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar. Proverbs 30:6
Hearing what someone says is easy. Repeating what someone says is a little more difficult. Often people add to what someone has said. They interpret the words to mean something different than what was originally stated, thus adding to the person’s words. Along with the misinterpretation, many will also add extra words and thoughts, often their own, to embellish the story to fit their desired outcome and change the mind of the listeners.
The writer of this proverb warns the people to not add to the words of God or else He will rebuke the person and that person will be discovered as a liar.
Watching the news makes it easy for a person to discover how people are quick to add to what someone has said and change it up. It is very common for people to take one little part of a speech or statement and take it out of context and add meaning to it that was never intended. This can cause the speaker to look bad.
Throughout the church there are many who have done this very thing with God’s word. They are quick to add to God’s word meaning and words that God never said. People are trying to justify sin and say that God accepts sinful acts as good in this manner. Murder of children, adultery, sexual immorality, homosexuality, gossip, lying and much more are promoted inside of churches as acceptable to God. Words have been added that God never said making them a liar.
Believers take God’s word for what it is and what God said. They will not add or take away anything, no matter how difficult the saying is. His word is true and perfect, just as it is.
As you read the Bible, there may be times in which you may be tempted to add to it or take what was said out of context and change it up. Seek God’s Holy Spirit to lead and guide you in correctly understanding His word. Stand upon the promise that His word is perfect and true. Do not follow the ways of the world and add or change what God had said. Live by His words and speak only His words. God’s word is alive and strong and will last for eternity, your words will not. Don’t be a liar with God’s word.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know God’s word as for what it is; that God will reveal areas in which you add to His word; and that God will give you strength to keep His word.
