Hidden Worldviews

The authors, Steven Wilkens and Mark L. Sandford, of this book begin by describing what makes a worldview a worldview. They state the often people look at certain major worldviews, but miss what the common worldviews are that are very seldom seen as a worldview, though held by the majority in the world.

Specifically, they choose to look at what they see as the greatest and most common worldviews, though they admit that there are many more. These eight worldviews are: individualism, consumerism, nationalism, moral relativism, scientific naturalism, the new age, postmodern tribalism, and salvation by therapy.

They take one chapter to look at each of these worldviews. Each chapter begins with describing what the worldview is and then they take a look at the positive aspects of each worldview. Finally, they look at the negative aspects or faults of each worldview in view of a biblical worldview. All of them deny God in some way or another and the power and authority He has.

As they look at these worldviews, they use common everyday examples of how they can be seen and how they are promoted nearly everywhere, worldwide. Once one understands what each of these worldviews are and how they are seen in everyday society, one cannot but help realize how much many in the church have bought into part or all of many of these worldviews.

The final two chapters of the book take a view at a biblical worldview and talk about how one is to come with a proper biblical worldview. They do state that no one will have a perfect worldview because all have sinned and are imperfect without the perfect view of God. It is a process of continuing to perfect the worldview with a growing understanding of God’s word.

I highly recommend reading this book to gain a better biblical worldview. It will open your eyes to new thoughts on how worldview will often shape one’s thinking, words and actions, and often without even realizing what is occurring.
