Psalm 131:1 Don’t Have A Proud Heart

Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, nor with things too profound for me. Psalm 131:1

People are often excited about who they are, what they have done or what they have. This becomes especially true if those things are greater than what someone else is, has done or has. Their hearts and minds are filled with pride with their own personal accomplishments. Having pride is often seen as a good thing because it is looking out for self and building one’s own self-esteem up.

David tells God that his heart is not haughty or prideful, nor is his eyes lofty and that he does not deal with things that are too profound for him.

The world teaches that everything is about self. Self is the most important thing in life. One has to be bigger and better than everyone else, at any cost and in every area. Living with this type of mindset will cause one to talk about things that one really doesn’t know about and to have a heart filled with pride.

America, and several other nations around the world, take the month of June to celebrate PRIDE month. It is a time to be filled with pride with who one is. It is also a time to celebrate and promote sin.

Pride is what got Satan kicked out of heaven and caused Adam and Eve to sin against God. It is putting oneself above God and removing God from His rightful throne.

Being a believer is one who is humble before God, just as Jesus was humble and went to the cross for something He did not do. One needs to allow God to be in complete control of everything and to put others before self, lifting them up. There is to be no room for pride in the heart of the believer.

It is probably easy for your heart to be filled with pride for some of the accomplishments you have made in your life. Do not allow yourself to be filled with the sinful pride of this world. Instead of being filled with pride, recognize that it was God who gave you the ability to accomplish what you have done and has made you who you are. Be humble and give God all the glory and praise, rather than taking it on for yourself.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will recognize how God has worked in your life; that God will help you remove all pride in your heart; that you will allow God to be in control of your life; and that you will repent of any sinful pride in your life before God.
