Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people. Jude 1:3
Every person has something that he will contend or fight for. It is different for every person, depending upon what one’s values are. Some will fight for their reputation, others for their freedom, some for their family or friends, others for their possessions and the list goes on.
What a person is willing to fight for is what he values the most in his life.
John states that he wanted to write about salvation but chose instead to write to encourage them to contend for their faith in Christ.
In the same way that the world is willing to fight for certain values, believers also fight for certain values. Depending upon the circumstances and a person’s experiences, it depends on what a believer will contend for.
Often churches and believers will fight against very specific sins, such as abortion, homosexuality, immoral sex and more. While standing against such sins and many more is good, many forget to stand up for their faith in Jesus and against the “smaller” sins, such as gossip, lying, cheating, adultery and such.
In this process of ignoring the faith, many have fallen into habitual sins and seeing them as acceptable in the eyes of God, rather than evil against God. They allow God’s grace to give them permission to sin, rather than to flee sin and pursue righteousness and holiness.
As a believer fights against sin in his own life, he will be a witness and strength for others to also fight against sin in their own lives. God has entrusted believers with His truth, so they must fight for that truth.
When you examine your life what do you see? Are you living a holy and righteous life as Jesus lived? Or have you allowed sin to creep in and rule your life?
Instead of allowing sin to come in and take over, fight against the principalities and dark powers of this world enticing you to sin, choose to live for God and the faith He has given you. This is a battle for your soul and the souls of others.
God has entrusted you with salvation, don’t tread on it and abuse it or lose it.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know the life God has called you to live; that God will strengthen and guide you to live as Jesus lived; and that God will strengthen you to fight against sin in your own life.
