Galatians 1:6 Are You A Deserter?

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel. Galatians 1:6

A person who chooses to leave his post during a battle is a deserter. It is giving up or going over to the enemy’s side during a battle.

Very few people like a person who is a deserter. Soldiers in the army who choose to desert during a battle are punished with some of the highest forms of punishment. At one time, they were even killed for deserting their post.

As Paul opens his letter to the Galatians, he immediately talks about how he could not believe that some were deserting Jesus for a different gospel.

At the moment a believer chooses to follow Jesus, he is enlisted into the army of God and is put into a battle for his life and the lives of others. There is only one way to be in this army and that is through the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is by the grace of Christ that one is allowed to be in God’s army.

The gospel of Christ is the only way and the only truth. However, many in the church, after being a believer, have chosen to follow a different gospel. Many have chosen to call things that God calls sin as though it was not sin. Some have chosen to believe that there are other ways to God besides Jesus. Some have chosen to continue to sin, because God will forgive them.

Making the choice to believe in things that are not from God as though they are, is deserting Christ and following a different gospel or truth. It is choosing to side with the enemy–the world. It is denying Christ, something a true believer would never do.

If you have chosen to believe in and follow Jesus, you are now in God’s army and there is only one way to live. That way is by the commands of God. God is your supreme commander and with only one truth to follow.

Do not allow yourself to be deceived by the world to cause you to desert Christ so that you may live in sin. Do not live a lie, but live by the truth of Christ–the gospel message.

You are a soldier in God’s army, will you become a deserter?

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know the truth of Jesus; that you will remain faithful in God’s army; that you will not desert God’s truth; and God will open your eyes to the deception of the enemy.
