In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 2 Corinthians 8:2
Giving is something that some people like to do, but most are not great at doing it. The type of giving most people do, is giving when they have an abundance or giving what they no longer need.
During spring cleaning, it is common to see many people suddenly donate many things to various organizations. Most of what is donated are things that they no longer want. Others will give a little more, but only to look good.
Paul commended the Macedonian church because of their extreme giving. At a time that they were under severe persecution and extreme poverty, they generously gave to those in need.
Giving generously is something that many people struggle with, because they are trying to survive with what little that they have. There is a feeling that if they give up what little they have to someone else, they will fall short of their own needs.
Believers who act in this way have forgotten what Jesus gave to them. Jesus left all of the riches of heaven to live here on the earth. Then in His poverty, He gave His life for each and every person to have eternal life.
God has already provided for the greatest need that a person could ever possibly have, to be forgiven and given life. Since God has already given that much, He will be willing to give anything else that is needed.
The believer must be willing to trust God to meet all of his needs as he works to give generously in order to meet the needs of others. As he finds joy in rich generosity, God will pour back into him as needed.
Most likely you know someone who is in need of something that you could provide for. Instead of hoarding what you have to survive on it, be willing to give it away with a generous, loving heart.
As you provide for the needs of others, God will in turn touch the hearts of others to provide abundantly for your needs. Give in the same way that Jesus gave to you. Be willing to give anything and everything to those in need with great joy so that God will be able to return that blessing to you in your time of need.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know what God has already given you; that you will find joy in giving as God has given you; and that God will open your eyes to the needs of others that you can meet.
