And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Matthew 6:7
There are some people who love to talk and talk and talk, and keep on talking. Of those people, very few actually have something of value to keep talking about.
Words are being spoken, but have very little meaning, or are just being repeated over and over in slightly different ways. Salesmen can speak a mile a minute, trying to show one that they care, but only to try and trap someone into buying something not really needed.
As Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray, He tells them not to keep on babbling when they are praying.
During times of praying, especially in public, many believers will pray very long and grand repetitive prayers. This is often done for one of two main reasons. Either they are trying to look good with their prayers. Or they are trying to get God’s attention and an answer to a prayer.
Although one cannot see God directly, one can know that God hears every prayer, regardless of how long or short, loud or quiet it is. The reality is God knows what one needs even before it is asked in prayer.
God may be like a person who tunes out a babbling person and tunes out the long, lengthy babbling prayers of some. Those types of prayers are often not really done in faith, but out of fear or manipulation to get God to do something.
One cannot praise and worship God too much, but talking to God in prayer about needs, can be taken too far. Rather than babble on, one just needs to present his needs to God and trust God has heard those needs.
As with every believer, you have some needs in your life. Some needs are greater than other needs. Talk to God about every one of those needs.
However, as you talk to Him, do not allow yourself to keep going on and on about a need. Present it and let it go into His hands. God hears you the first time.
Talking more may show a lack of faith in God and promote self more. Instead of talking more about your needs, quickly present your needs and then take more time to praise and worship God.
Don’t talk too much, unless it is in praise and worship.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will have faith that God hears your prayers; that you will worship and praise God more; that you will not babble when praying to God; and that your faith in God will grow.
