In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:11
Giving up something is often very difficult to do for most people. This is especially true if it is something that they really love doing or having. It has no bearing on whether it is bad for them or not.
Most people struggle with dieting, even though most often it is something very good for the overall health. As they are going through the withdrawals, they feel as if they are dying and have no life left, even though it is bringing them a better life.
Paul tells the believers that they must consider themselves as dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Sin is something that is fun to do on the surface, despite the damage it does to the individual and to others. Humans are born and allowed to sin until the point it just becomes a natural part of who they are. It is a built in habit, until one becomes a believer in Jesus.
Once a person is a believer, he is to count himself dead to sin. Giving up sin is a dying process. It can be, and often is, painful and slow. Yet, through Jesus, God has given each person the power and ability to turn away from sin. It is all a matter of choice, just as turning away from sweets when on a diet.
When a person begins to realize that he can have a real life in Jesus, then he is more able to allow himself to be dead to sin. As a dead person, sin will no longer have any pull, attraction or control over the person.
He will be dead to sin, but alive in Christ Jesus. That life is greater than anything sin can offer.
As a believer, allow yourself to die to sin. Do not allow sin to be in control of your life. Instead of looking at sin as something you must give up, look at Jesus and see Him as life you are picking up.
The life Jesus offers will give you peace, joy and a life that will extend into eternity, not just a simple momentary pleasure that ends in depression, greed and death. It may be painful in the moment turning from sin, but the end results are worth it.
Are you dead to sin and alive in Christ Jesus?
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that God will guide you in turning from sin; that you will know the life Jesus offers you; that you will know the peace you have in Christ Jesus; and that you will be alive in Christ Jesus.
