Matthew 21:5 No Pride

“Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and a colt, the foal of a donkey.'” Matthew 21:5

Most leaders or people of high position and authority like to look good when out in public. It is common to see leaders of nations, as they travel to a different country, to travel with a lot of pomp and circumstance.

The red carpet is rolled out for them as they come in with lots of ceremony and dressed in their finest. They will often travel in very nice vehicles, looking great, with a big show.

As Jesus was coming into Jerusalem, He was riding a donkey, in fact, a baby donkey. This was to fulfill a prophecy by Zechariah.

Jesus, being God Himself, who created the world and all that is in it, was a great and mighty king. He had the right and authority to ride in to town with the best ceremony. Yet, He came in on a untrained baby donkey. There was no pride in His arrival. Jesus was being very humble, despite His being the greatest king.

Just as the world often shows great pride in their arriving, many believers often show pride. They want to show off their abilities or talents and accomplishments. They want people to know that they have arrived and are important.

Acting like this is very different than Jesus. Every believer is to be like Jesus–humble, not full of pride. Pride is all about self, whereas humility is about others. While Jesus deserved and accepted worship, He did not demand or grab for it, He was humble.

When believers are humble and are building others up, it allows God to lift them up in due time. It will also break down walls, allowing for the testimony of Jesus to be made known.

Take a moment to examine your life. Ask God to reveal to you any actions or words in your life that are full of self and pride, rather than filled with God and love for others.

Do not allow yourself to be filled with self-pride, causing damage to your witness of who Jesus is. Strive to lift up Jesus and build others up, rather than step on them.

As you rid yourself of pride, your witness for Jesus will grow with more credibility. Be willing to ride the untrained, baby donkey.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will have the humility that Jesus displayed; that you will build others up as Jesus did; and that your life will be a witness to this world as to who Jesus is.
