“Why should I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me and sworn by gods that are not gods. I supplied all their needs, yet they committed adultery and thronged to the houses of prostitutes.” Jeremiah 5:7
When a person has had something done wrong to him, most people do not want to forgive. They see that the wrong has given them the right to get vengeance and strike back.
Courts and judges are asked all the time to forgive a person. Yet, they are willing to ask the question of why. They want to know why they should forgive the criminal because he had done something wrong. Most often, they do not forgive and punishment is given.
God asks the people why He should forgive them. The people of Israel had rejected Him and gave themselves to foreign, false gods even while He was providing for them.
It is bad enough when a person does not know to not do something, but it is worse for him when he knows not to do something, but still does it. In cases where the person has been taught better, judges are more lenient on the judgments.
There have been many believers who have purposefully chosen to reject God’s way of living and follow false gods. Gods of money, position, and things. Even while going to church and claiming to believe in Jesus, they give themselves over to sinful ways.
God does not have to forgive a person, but His love demands it when the person repents. Despite all that man has done against God, He is still willing to forgive immediately when a person repents.
The only reason God is willing to forgive is because of His immense great love He has for all people. Immediately upon repentance, God is ready to forgive and build the person back up again.
As you are going through your life, do not give God any reason to not forgive you. Know and understand His great love for you and live for Him with all of your being.
When God points out sin in your life, quickly repent of it and turn away from that sin. No longer allow sin to master you, but be mastered by God.
As you repent and turn away from sin and towards God, He will forgive you. God will restore you and build you up, rather than tear you down and destroy you.
Are you giving God a reason to not forgive you?
I pray today that you will know God’s great love for you; that God will guide you in living for Him; that you will turn away from all sin towards God; and that you will not reject God in any area of your life.
