He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” Matthew 13:31-32
Jesus tells the people another parable. This one is about a mustard seed and how large it grows, comparing it to the kingdom of heaven.
Small beginnings do not usually show much hope. When a child is born under weight and size, doctors and parents are usually worried. Many people do not have much hope for a child born too small. Yet, there are some children born extremely early, underweight and size, that grow into a large person that looms over most people.
In the work life of many people, they start out at the bottom of the workforce. They are just a small person, doing what appears to be an unseen job. Yet, with lots of hard work, they can rise up the ladder in the work world. There are a number of people who have started out in extreme poverty and rose to be some of the wealthiest people on the earth.
God’s kingdom is working in that same way. It started out with Jesus and twelve men, one of whom walked away. They went through extreme persecution and struggles, yet, that kingdom kept growing. People kept coming to the Lord, becoming citizens of God’s kingdom.
The world tried to stop them when they were small, yet, the kingdom kept growing and spreading around the world. Today, in nearly every nation there are some believers. It has grown larger than any other belief in the world, despite the enemy trying to stop God’s kingdom.
The only reason that God’s kingdom keeps growing is that believers are doing what Jesus did–spread the good news of salvation. Jesus came to save people and that is what He did.
You have a mission also. It is to tell everyone you can about the salvation that Jesus provides. As you do that, the kingdom of heaven will continue to grow larger and larger. It started out small, but now covers all over the earth and is still growing.
As you go through your day today, who can you tell about Jesus? How can you help His kingdom grow?
I pray today that God will reveal to you ways to be His witness; that you will allow God to make you more like Jesus; that God will draw more people to Jesus through you; and that God’s kingdom will grow daily through your life.
