Hebrews 6:1-2 Moving Beyond The Beginning

“Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.” Hebrews 6:1-2

After pointing out that Jesus is the high priest, and a warning to not fall away, the author of Hebrews now says it is time to move on. This moving on is to move beyond the basics of what it means to be a Christian. These things are repentance, faith, praying, resurrection and eternal judgment.

The game of chess is somewhat complicated to learn to play. It is even more complicated to get good at. Beginning to play is learning how all of the pieces can move and what they can and cannot do. Often a player learns a few basic moves and stays with those. Someone more advanced learns to expect those moves and can defeat the player. To get very good at playing one must get beyond the basics and learned the advanced skills of playing.

In the same way many people become believers in Jesus. But they never get beyond the basics of having to be told to repent of their sins and about their future hope in Jesus.

The author is telling you to move beyond those basic beginning moves of being a Christian. Learn what it means to be the hands, feet and voice of Jesus in this world. Learn what it means to be a light in this dark world. Learn how you can be His witness.

Along with those things, also learn to become more mature in Jesus. Your faith should be growing constantly. Just as a human child changes as he grows, so you must change as you grow in Jesus.

Are you the same person you was two years ago? Or even three months ago?

What do you strive to know? The basics of being a Christian? Or the advanced teachings of Jesus and the Bible?

Move on with your life. Do not stay young in Jesus. Grow in maturity in your walk with God.

I pray today that God will reveal ways you need to change in your life; that God will guide you by His Holy Spirit to become more mature in Jesus; that you will not need the basic teachings of Jesus; and that God will be able to use you to build His kingdom more.
