Revelation 2:9 You Are Rich

“I know your afflictions and your poverty–yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.” Revelation 2:9

The second church that Jesus talks about is the church in Smyrna. He sees their afflictions and poverty, yet calls them rich.

Afflictions is another word for the problems and trials that people have. Everyone has some. Sometimes they have more, other times less, but always some.

Poverty is very common talk, even today. Jesus had said earlier that you would always have the poor among you.

In the USA there is constant talk about the level of poverty in the nation. Yet, people in America are among the richest people in the world…at least financially.

In the world’s eyes if you do not make a certain amount of money, own your own house, have the right car and dress the right way…you are poor. The people of this church may have fit that description. Yet, Jesus calls them rich.

If you have no money, don’t own your own house and have the newest car, how can you be rich? According to God being rich is not found in these temporary things. Remember that when you are going through troubles you are blessed. When you are blessed you are rich.

Your riches are found in having a direct relationship with God Himself. It is found in having eternal life. It is found in having a peace that passes understanding. It is found in knowing that God does care for you and loves you.

What can it do for you if you have physical riches, but do not have anything with God? God’s blessings are for eternity and cannot be destroyed by man in any way.

In the very next verse you are told not to be afraid and to continue to be faithful all the way unto death. The world lives in fear because they do not know what tomorrow holds. You know you have eternity with Jesus in your future. What better retirement plan could you get than that?

I pray today that God will open your eyes to how rich you are; that God will reward you for your faithfulness to Him; that you will remain strong in Jesus each day; and that you will be His witness to someone.
