Revelation 1:17 The Right Fear

“When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.” Revelation 1:17

John is alone on the island of Patmos. He was there as a prisoner because of his following Jesus. Suddenly he hears someone speaking to him.

He turns around and sees someone. The description of the person is an out of this world type description. This person’s eyes were like a blazing fire, his voice of rushing waters and his mouth had a double-edged sword.

This is a picture of someone very powerful. John passes out immediately in fear.

This person then touches him with his right hand and says “do not be afraid”. This was Jesus Himself.

Jesus describes Himself as the First and the Last. This can be the first Adam and the last Adam. Jesus was before Adam ever was since He is God and created everything. He is also the last Adam in that He rose from the dead and gives new life to everyone.

The interesting thing is how John originally reacted to seeing Jesus–he fell at his feet as though dead–he passed out in fear.

Many people treat God as just another person. How many times have you heard of God being called the “man upstairs”? Those who do not really serve Jesus will just call Him a good prophet or a good teacher.

Even many Christian believers see Jesus as just their “buddy” or “best friend”. Often He is not seen as God, the One in control.

John saw Jesus in His power. Jesus has the power to destroy everyone and everything. John probably also realized how sinful he was before a perfect God.

Often believers look at their sins as just a part of who they are. It is very lightly looked at. They do not realize the impact of their sin–death. They do not realize how much God hates sin and how worthy He is to destroy them because of sin.

This is where John passes out.

Although Jesus is perfect and has the authority to destroy you because of your sin, He does not do so. Jesus wants to have a relationship with you. He places His right hand upon you of fellowship and love.

Today, take a real look at Jesus. Realize who He really is and what He can do. Also realize what Jesus wants to do in your life. Do not see Jesus as just a good teacher, see Him as God Almighty. But do not fear. He also loves you.

I pray that today Jesus will give you a vision of who He is; that Jesus will reveal His love for you; that you will know the fellowship you can have with Jesus; and that you will show a respectful, right fear of God.
