1 Peter 5:6 Humble Yourself

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” 1 Peter 5:6

Right before this verse Peter talks to elders to willingly serve those under them and for the younger men to submit with humility to the elders. Now he tells everyone to be humble.

Humility is something that the world does not really like. People of the world like to be lifted up and honored and many will grab that honor whether or not it is deserved or given. The Army has the slogan of “be all you can be.” The world says do all you can do and be all you can be because you are #1.

Some Christians will go to the other end of the spectrum of saying that they can do nothing at all and are totally worthless. No matter what they do, they will always cut themselves down in humility.

There is a bit of truth in each person needing to be all that he can be and there is a bit of truth in his being worthless. You need to be and do everything you can be and do, but it must all be done in Christ Jesus. In and of yourself, you are worthless, but in Christ Jesus you are worth everything. Jesus paid the price of dying for you, what higher price can there be for a person?

Without God no one can do anything. It is Jesus who made everything and sustains everything. In Jesus, there is nothing you cannot do. Remember that with God all things are possible. Also remember that it is God working in and through you. Do not allow what God is doing in and through you to become something you claim that you did. This is where humility comes in.

When you allow God to receive all the glory for what He is doing in and through you, it allows God to later lift you up. Whoever lifts himself up, God will cast down. Allow others to lift you up. Do not lift yourself up. Point everything you do to the glory of God. Serve others as though they are #1 in the world. Jesus died for you as though you were the only one that needed His death, although He also died for everyone else at the same time.

At just the right time God will lift you up. He will give you honor when the time is right if your heart is right. Do everything you can, but do it in the power of Jesus. It is the death and resurrection of Jesus that gives you the ability and value.

I pray that today God will help you to serve in humility; that your humility will be correctly balanced; that you will know that in Jesus there is nothing you cannot do; that in Jesus you ultimate value; and that at the right time God will lift you up.

  1. Wonderful post! Humility is something we all struggle with for sure! I know a few people who exhibit humility in everything they do and are quick to tell us that what they do is the Lord’s doing, not theirs, because they are not capable without His help. I admire that they can say that and we know that they truly mean it! Thank you Lord Jesus for making everything possible!

Something I struggle with always, as do a lot of us! I know some people who truly are humble people, giving God the credit for everything they accomplish and they truly mean what they say. I admire them and strive to be like them!
