“Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God” Hebrews 6:1
The author of Hebrews had just finished telling us about who Jesus is and His position and authority. Now he wants to move on beyond these basics of Christianity. He does not want to repeat all the basics again. He wants to move on to great things. He wants us to grow in maturity.
Many people like to be like Peter Pan and never grow up. They like the idea of no responsibilities, accountability, and having lots of fun. All this can be fun, but cannot bring the joy of accomplishment through hard work. It cannot bring about the change that occurs only with self-sacrifice and diligence. No one learns anything if everything is given to him and done for him. God has things in store for us that we cannot even imagine if we are willing to work with and for Him.
In order to work with God we must be willing to grow more mature, to become more like Jesus in every way. Many people like to just hear sermons about God’s love and forgiveness, but are unwilling to hear about His requirements for work, obedience, and to run from sin. All people want to hear about is the “good clean” side of Christianity. They do not want to hear “dirty side” about sacrifice and selflessness and hard work. Today we want things instantly and so we refuse to work hard and wait for things to come.
Today stop reading just the Gospels and start reading the rest of the Scriptures; stop just asking for forgiveness, but start asking how you can serve God more; seek God in how to be more like Jesus every day.
I pray that today God will guide you in becoming more like Jesus; that God will help you in putting yourself aside and putting Him first in your life; that God will help you to become more mature in your walk with Him; and that you will move on to the greater things God has in store for you.
