Amos 4:9 Getting Your Attention

“Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards, destroying them with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees, yet, you have not returned to me,” declares the LORD. Amos 4:9

In this chapter, Amos is quoting God, who is upset with Israel. They had chosen to walk away from God, so God brought on many different calamities, drought, plagues, and death. God had struck their gardens and vineyards, which is their livelihood and food. Yet, the people refused to return to Him. They chose to continue to live in their sinful ways, knowing God was angry with them.

Disaster strikes people all the time. Some of those disasters are caused by another person, while others are caused by the weather. The world looks at those disasters as a bad luck of the draw, part life. Many will blame others for the natural disasters, claiming that it is because of the way people run things. It is natural for the world to see things this way, because they do not know God and have never known Him.

For believers, it is a different story. When disaster strikes a believer, the first thing he should do is turn to God for help. Disaster can strike a believer for one of two main reasons: 1) God is trying to get his attention, because he has walked away from Him 2) God is allowing Satan to strike and test him. Either way, the believer should turn to God.

There are many believers do not choose to turn to God, but turn to other people and things of this world. They reject God’s help, especially when it is being done because of sin in their lives. They will seek help in medicine, drugs, alcohol, entertainment, music, people, and even doing more ministry work, everything but turning to God.

In your own personal life, things may be occurring that are making things extremely difficult for you. As you are going through these situations seek God out. Take a look at your life and see where you are really standing with God.

Are you walking with God? Then trust that He will give you the strength to make it through the situation.

Have you walked away from God? Then turn back to Him and repent of all sin. Seek to know His ways and then follow them.

I pray today that you will always follow Jesus; that you will not turn from the path God has for you; that when disaster strikes, you will turn to God first; and that you will know that God is always waiting for you to return to Him.

Hosea 6:3 Press In To Acknowledge The Lord

Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth. Hosea 6:3

Israel was unfaithful to God and had forsaken Him by following after many different idols. God chose to punish them, by placing them into exile under the control of other nations. Hosea is putting out a call to the people to turn back to God and acknowledge Him.

Despite the punishment, God was ready to revive them and restore them. His prophecy looks forward to the time of Jesus dying on the cross, then raising from the dead to restore them. It was going to come, just like the rains come and they were to look forward to it.

As the rains stops for a time and the ground dries up, it appears as though God has forgotten His people. There are cracks in the ground and the crops are not growing. It appears as though they are completely rejected. Yet, the rains will come again in the right time.

When there are many troubles and people have turned away from God, it is difficult for many people to be willing to acknowledge God. They feel that because of all the troubles, God is not in control and they seek their help from somewhere else, other gods.

Yet, God is always working on behalf of all people. His goal is to revive everyone to live for Him and have a full life. There will come a time when He will appear in the life of a believer and bring relief, just like the rains bring relief to the ground. Just as one can trust that the rains will come to water the ground, one can trust Jesus will return and be there.

Acknowledge that God knows what is best for your life. Acknowledge that He is the King and the One who is in control. Push to let others know this information. Allow God to be first in every area of your life. As that happens, God will come near to you. He will show Himself in and through you.

Acknowledge God today, so that He will be able to acknowledge you when Jesus returns.

I pray today that you will know God personally; that you will acknowledge God in all that you do; that you will know God’s presence; and that God will revive you to a full life with Him.

Judges 10:15-16 Admitting Sin

But the Israelites said to the LORD, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.” Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer. Judges 10:15-16

The Israelites had started worshipping various idols and rejecting God, so God allowed the Ammonites to come in and begin to take over. The Israelites were under much persecution and torment. After a time of this, they chose to go before God to get help. They had admitted that they had sinned against God and chose to get rid of their idols in order to serve God. They gave God the option of what to do with them because of their sin, but they wanted relief from the enemy.

When a person chooses to reject God and follow idols after serving Him, He usually allows it, but will also allow the enemy to come in and cause torment. The peace and comfort a person had with God will be gone. Things will not work out in the same way as with God.

The purpose of God allowing the enemy to come in is to work to get the person back to Him.

When things are going bad, most people will turn to God. They do not often look at what brought them to that point, but know that they need God to help them.

You may or may not be in this position right now. When you do get into that position, the important thing is to admit your sin to God. Admit that you have walked away from Him. Turn from those sins, and turn back to God.

Allow God to have control of your life again.

As you do this, God will work to restore your life to Him. God does not like to see His people in misery, but He also cannot accept sin in their lives.

Do not be like the Israelites and turn to God just to be helped out of trouble. Turn to Him with all of your heart and life. Serve and worship Him daily in every area of your life.

God will then help you through every situation in your life.

I pray today that you will admit to God your sins and repent of them; that you will turn from all idols to God alone; that you will allow God to lead your life; and that you will stay away from all sin in your life.
