1 John 5:5 Are You An Overcomer?

Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:5

In the journey of life every person will encounter many different types of obstacles that get in their way. These obstacles can sometimes be very small and easy to get over or around, while others are very large and difficult to overcome.

When the obstacles are large and looming, most people will give up the goal and do something different. A few seriously dedicated people will do whatever it takes to overcome the obstacle, regardless of how large or difficult it is.

John asks who is the one that overcomes the world, then gives the answer. The only ones who can overcome the world is the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

For the believer, the greatest obstacle that he will face in his lifetime is the world. The majority of the world is against those who believe in Jesus, because it goes against what the world thinks and desires. God sets a high standard of living that the world does not want to attain. They want to live as they desire with no restraints.

Resisting temptation to follow the world’s way of living and sin is a challenge for the believer. It starts with believing that Jesus is the Son of God. As the Son of God, there is nothing that Jesus cannot do. He has the power and ability to give the believer strength to overcome any obstacle thrown his way by the world.

The challenge for the believer is to have faith in and believe Jesus for directions on how to overcome the world. Once he has that belief and faith in Jesus, there is nothing that the world can do to cause him to fall or fail, he will be an overcomer.

You will have difficulties and temptations to sin that will come your way every day. The only way to be victorious and overcome all of those challenges is to believe in Jesus Christ and follow Him as the Son of God. Know that Jesus is for you, not against you. He will give you what you need to overcome.

Jesus overcame death, the greatest problem and has the ability to help you overcome anything thrown your way.

Will you fail?

Or will you be an overcomer with Jesus?

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will know the overcoming power Jesus offers you; that you will believe in the power and direction of Jesus; that you will look to Jesus for power to overcome the world; and that God will strengthen you to not fall to the world’s ways and sin.

1 Thessalonians 3:13 A Strong Heart

May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones. 1 Thessalonians 3:13

In order for a person to live a good, long and healthy life, he must have a good heart. Having a good heart is achieved by eating and exercising properly.

One has to have the blood flow going through his body with power and strength to live a healthy life. Not doing these things will result in a poor heart, which in turn can cause an early death.

Paul prays that God would strengthen the hearts of the people, so that they will be blameless and holy in God’s presence.

The entire purpose of Jesus coming to the earth and dying upon the cross is to make people holy and blameless before God. It was to take a corrupt, selfish dead heart out of a person and give him a new, living and strong heart for God.

It is in the heart that the desires of a person rise up. Until Jesus works in a person, his heart is weak and falls to temptation to sin. A person’s desires are for selfishness and sin.

Just as with exercising physically will strengthen the heart, exercising one’s faith will also strengthen his heart. Getting on the treadmill of life and refusing to slow down and step into sin will strengthen the heart. Exercising the heart daily with studying God’s word and prayer will strengthen one’s heart and faith.

The strong heart will follow hard after God and refuse to go back to sin. It will be able to say no to the temptations that comes its way, keeping one’s self pure and blameless before God.

Each day you have to make a choice as to whether you will exercise or not. It is your choice to have a strong or weak heart and body. As a believer in Jesus, you must allow God to strengthen your heart to learn to follow after Him more and more.

Allow all of your desires to be the same desires as those of God, rather than for self and sin. God will use His word and time with you in prayer to strengthen your heart so that you will not sin against Him.

How strong is your heart?

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will allow God to change your heart; that you will seek to do what God desires of you; that you will allow the Holy Spirit to guide you away from all sin; and that you will be pure and blameless before God in all that you say, think or do.

1 Samuel 17:45 Fighting The Enemy

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” 1 Samuel 17:45

The Philistines had made an offer to the Israelites to have one man from each side fight together, whoever won the fight, that side would be the conquerors. Goliath was the chosen warrior for the Philistines. No one was willing to fight him, because he was a giant and a seasoned warrior.

David’s brothers were at the battle also. David was sent to bring them some food. When he saw the giant, he was willing to fight him. Goliath threatened him with many threats, but David just said he was coming against him in the name of God. With just a simple sling and one stone, David killed Goliath and the Israelites won the battle.

In today’s society most people do not have to physically go to war against another person. Only those who are in the military have to deal with that type of situation. However, there are many other battles against an enemy that every believing person must face on a daily basis.

You, along with every believer, have at least one enemy…the devil. He is seeking to get you to sin and fall away from God. He comes at you directly or through others, in your thoughts, and in your physical life. Temptations are thrown your way every day. It is a great battle to fight off these temptations of the enemy.

This battle is for your soul. It is up to you as to who will win the battle.

You must not try to fight the battle in your own strength using the weapons of this world. You must fight it in the power of God. It is God who the enemy is defying, not you. Allow God to win the battle in your life.

Do not give the enemy a chance at taking you down. Take the initiative and run forward first and take him out. Kill the temptations to sin and win the battle.

I pray today that God will give you courage to fight the enemy; that you will fight in God’s power and way; that you will allow God to destroy all temptation to sin; and that God will win the battle for your soul.

Genesis 39:9 A Bold Stand Against Sinning

“No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” Genesis 39:9

Joseph had become a slave to Potiphar. While working there as a slave, Potiphar noticed how well he worked and made him in charge of the entire household. At some point, Potiphar’s wife decided she wanted to have sex with Joseph. She thought that because he was a slave she could order him to do whatever she wanted and he would have to obey. Joseph pointed out the favor Potiphar had given him, and then said that asked her how he could do such a thing and sin against God. He refused her request.

Her request was probably made to Joseph when there was no one else around. For her, it would have been a completely legal thing to do. It could have been done quietly and no one would have known about it, at least no one human. God would know, and Joseph knew that, so he refused because he did not want to sin against God.

Throughout your life there will come times when something sinful will present itself in a way that no one else would know about it. This presentation could be with another person alone, or it could be while you are physically alone. It could be to have sex outside of marriage, or do drugs, or lie, or steal, or cheat, or watch pornography, or one of many other sins against God.

Most of these could be done in secret and most people would not know about it. However, both you and God would know. You would become guilty of sinning against God.

Are you willing to do that?

Are you willing to sell your soul for a moment of pleasure and sin against God?

Or are you going to be bold like Joseph and refuse to sin against God?

Take your stand against sin today and refuse. It will be worth it in the end. God will give you His favor and reward you.

I pray today that God will give you strength to resist sinful acts; that you will refuse to sin against God; that God will open your eyes to any temptations that come your way; and that you will live your life for God.
