Amos 7:7 Lining Up Straight

Leaning Tower of Pisa

This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. Amos 7:7

Construction of buildings is something that occurs worldwide. One of the important parts of the construction is that the walls are built straight vertically. If the wall is off just a small amount it will lean more and more as it goes up higher and higher.

One of the ways the construction workers can ensure that the wall stays straight and true is using a plumb line. This is a line with a weighted ball on the end to hold it straight ensuring the wall is straight to the line or if adjustments are needed.

Amos is given a vision of God holding a plumb line up against Israel. It is to see how well they are lined up with God’s standards.

People often like to measure how well they are doing or not doing by measuring themselves up against other people. They use a horizontal measurement. The problem with this is that no person has a perfect alignment that stays perfectly aligned and true all the time. People waver in their alignment, in how they act and react, speak and listen.

Jesus is the only person who walked perfectly upright and straight all the time. His plumb line is lined up with God.

Every believer must have a plumb line measured from him up to God and only to God. God is above every person on this earth and is the perfect alignment.

When a believer is measured up against the standard Jesus presents, it will allow him to see if there are imperfections or not in his life. It will reveal how closely aligned he is to God’s standard of living, not the wavering standards of this world.

While it is easy to compare yourself to another person, strive to not do that but rather compare yourself to Jesus. Find out how aligned you are to the way Jesus lived.

If you find that you are not in perfect alignment, ask God to show you how to make adjustments in your life to get into alignment. Keep working at it until you are perfectly plumbed straight and true to God and His unwavering standards. God does not, nor ever will change His ways.

As God holds a plumb line to your life, what will it reveal?

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will align your life to God’s will and ways; that you will fully live for God with all of your being; and that you will be a good representation of Jesus upon this earth.

Amos 7:7-8 Built Straight And True

This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. And the LORD asked me, “What do you see, Amos?” “A plumb line,” I replied. Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.” Amos 7:7-8

Amos was given a vision of God holding a plumb line up to the people of Israel. They were found to be off of being straight and true to God, so God planned to destroy them.

Plumb lines are used by carpenters to determine if something is built straight. The line that is being determined is the vertical line, going up and down. If a building or a wall is not built perfectly straight, it will cause many problems, very quickly. It could easily fall over, and the other sections of the building will not be able to line up correctly.

If a carpenter holds up a plumb line and the wall is not straight, he will tear it down and restart. Throughout the building process, he will use the plumb line on a regular basis to keep everything straight. Most people who are not carpenters will not use the plumb line. They will just use their eyesight and trust it is straight.

God has a plumb line that He uses to measure the success of building people up. His plumb line is Jesus and His Word. The plumb line is the measuring tool to determine if a person is lining up correctly with what God wants. This line is from earth to heaven, from sinful man to God’s holy righteousness.

Very often people try to build themselves up, but do not use God’s measuring line. They use their own eyes and measure themselves against others. This can cause problems, because their plumb line may not be straight and true. Their life is built on a crooked line.

As a believer, you must keep your life lined up with God’s standards. Allow God to build you up His way, which will always be straight and true to His Word. Do not follow people or churches, but God. Let His plumb line be your measuring device.

How do you measure up to God’s holy righteousness?

I pray today that you will know God’s plumb line for your life; that God will reveal to you how to live your life for Him; that God will build you up straight and true to Him; and that God will find that you are a great building for His kingdom.
