Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 2 Corinthians 7:10
Nearly every person has some type of sorrow in their life. Most often the sorrow has to do with something that went wrong. This can be someone did something wrong, made a bad choice, or the loss of someone or something.
Sorrow of a loss is one of the most common sorrows talked about. Everyday there are lists of people who have died and people mourning about it.
The other common sorrow is that one was caught doing something wrong, not sorrow for the wrong done.
As Paul rejoices at the Corinthian church’s repentance he states that Godly sorrow leads to salvation, while worldly sorrow only brings on death.
Most people are very quick to be sorrowful when they are caught in the act or having been proved of doing something wrong. The sorrow is not so much that they did something wrong, but that they got caught and convicted as guilty.
Having a sorrow like this, does not lead to repentance nor change, which in turn will not lead to salvation. Without repentance, God is unable to forgive a person of his sins. Without forgiveness of sins, God is unable to save a person from the consequence of those sins.
Believers who fully understand what Jesus has done for them will regret, with a Godly sorrow, each and every time any sin that they commit. They will strive to change and live for God more and more. They will allow the Holy Spirit to change them from then inside out.
Living in this way leads to life, including eternal life. It allows God to work in one’s life to make him more like Jesus every day.
Just as with everyone else you have made mistakes and sinned against God. You have made choices that were wrong, both against others and against God.
When this is revealed to you, ask yourself what are you to do now. You have a choice to make. You can be sorry that you were caught. Or you can be sorry that you sinned against God and strive to change.
Make the choice to allow God to change you into a new creation. Make the choice to turn away from ever doing that sin again. Make the choice that brings about salvation, not death.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will reveal sins you have committed; that you will repent of all sins before God; that you will have a sorrow for sins that will bring about repentance before God; and that you will know the life God has for you.
