This is what the Lord says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord. Jeremiah 9:23-24
Boasting is rampant among people in all areas of society. It is not just with the wealthy or the poor, but most people boast about something. Often it is a boasting when they have something or do something better than someone else.
People want to look better in the eyes of others, so they boast about themselves.
God tells the people to not boast, unless they are boasting about knowing and understanding Him and who He is.
Strength and wealth are temporary things of this earth. The wisdom of man is worthless compared to the wisdom of God. Yet people will boast about themselves in these three areas on a regular basis. It makes them appear as though they are something, when in reality they are nothing without God.
Boasting like this can even occur inside the church. Some will boast about their being a member of a certain group, or boast about their position in the church, or how much they give.
God does not like boasting in this way, because without Him, none of these things would be possible. It is God who gives a person strength, wisdom and wealth.
Believers need to boast about knowing God and who He is. There can never be enough said about who God is and what He is like. When Jesus is lifted up, He can then lift the believer up and reach the world for the lost.
While you may have accomplished many things, none of them were accomplished without God’s help in your life. You do not even have the ability to breath without God giving you the breath.
Take a moment to think about what you are talking to others about. Are you boasting about yourself and things you have accomplished? Are you boasting about other people? Or are you boasting about God?
Think about all the things God has done in your life. Count all the blessings He has already given you. Now talk about these things. Boast about His great love, mercy, and grace in your life. Lift Him up, not yourself.
I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will know God’s great love in your life; that God will help you remove all boasting about yourself in your life; and that you will lift God up every chance you get.
I will tell of the kindnesses of the Lord, the deeds for which he is to be praised, according to all the Lord has done for us–yes, the many good things he has done for Israel, according to his compassion and many kindnesses. Isaiah 63:7
People love to talk about many different things. Some will talk about the latest sports games, others talk about politics or whatever is going on in the news. Some will talk about the newest movies or trends occurring. Parents often talk about their children or grandchildren. And the list is endless.
Regardless of what people talk about, it is always about something of interest. It is always the interest of the person talking, and sometimes in the interest of the person listening.
Isaiah says one of the things he will talk about is God’s kindness and good deeds. He is recognizing and telling people of all the good things God has done for Israel, so that He may be praised.
Every believer has something that they can talk about, no matter what is going on in life. That one thing is God’s great kindness. No one had to be saved. Every person deserved punishment and death because of sin. Yet, God in His great love chose to provide for forgiveness of sins and salvation.
Along with salvation, God has also done many things for every person. His provision of breath, life, food, clothing, and shelter are just a few of the basics. God has also provided healing, joy, peace, comfort, understanding, wisdom, direction and more.
The amount of kind things that God has done for every believer is endless. These are the things a believer can talk about. Other believers need to be encouraged with hearing these things. The world needs to hear it to know who God is and what He is like.
Every day you will have opportunities to talk to someone. Sometimes for just a few minutes, other times for hours. Instead of just talking about the news and the weather, talk about what God has done and is doing in your life.
Be quick to share with others the good deeds God has done for you. This will encourage some to trust in God more. It will also be a witness of your love for God and who God is in your life.
If you really think about it, you will never run out of good things to talk about when talking about God.
I pray today that you will know the salvation Jesus provides; that your eyes will be open to the kindness and good deeds of God; that you will talk about what God is doing to all you meet; and that you will share God’s kindness with others.
