Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there and it became a snare to Gideon and his family. Judges 8:26
Getting a gift or blessing from someone or a group for something that was done extra is always a good thing. It shows a person that he is honored and his extra work is recognized.
Companies and organizations around the world will often have times of honoring those who do the work. They recognize people who have gone above and beyond their job or position. The honor can be one of many things, such as a plaque, gift of money, a gift card, a picture, name in a newsletter, an extra vacation, and nearly anything the mind can think of.
There is nothing wrong with getting honored with a gift. However, there are some people who worship that gift.
After Gideon had defeated the Midianites, the people had given him some of the gold from the plunder they had taken. This gold was melted down and made into an ephod. Immediately the people and Gideon started to worship that ephod. It was as though the ephod had saved them from the Midianites.
Not only do people in the world tend to worship the blessing that was given, there are people in the church who have done the same thing. They may not say it is God, but they talk about the honor given as though it is the best thing in all of life. They keep it clean and posted where everyone can see it, and they make sure that people see it.
This is taking the honor of what God has done away from Him. It is focusing on what self did. The blessing ends up being worshipped more than God.
Take a look at your own life. What honors have you received over the years? How do you respond to those honors?
Be careful to keep you eyes and focus upon God. When people talk about the honor or blessing, point them back to God as the one who helped you do what you did.
Do not allow the honor or the blessing take the throne of your life or anyone else’s life. Do not allow it to become a snare pulling you away from God.
Everyone deserves some honor, but keep it in the right perspective–God made it possible.
I pray today that you will recognize God’s work through you; that you will give God the honor due to Him; that you will not worship things or positions in your life; and that you will worship only God.
But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.” Numbers 20:12
It is easy for a person to claim to honor someone, but it is a different thing to actually show that honor at all times. In order to show honor to someone, one must trust that person completely.
Most people will trust a person to a point, they do not trust completely in all things, at all times. There is usually a point of question where that trust breaks down. At that point honor for that person is dropped, there is no longer any trust.
After God had done many things in and through Moses in the process of bringing the people out of Egypt, Moses lets his trust down. God had told him to speak to the rock to bring water out of it. The people had been complaining about no water and that they were brought there to die. In anger at the people Moses struck the rock, rather than speaking to it as God had commanded.
Since he did not trust God enough to obey Him and honor Him in front of the people, there would be a price to pay. Moses would no longer be able to lead the people into the new land God had promised them.
While believers claim to believe in God and obey Him, there are times some will choose not to follow out all of God’s commands. They will allow their own feelings to rise up and not trust God, then choosing their own way to do something. Fear or anger often causes these actions.
As that is done, there can be consequences to the action of not honoring God’s word. God will take the person off of the path intended.
You must know that God always has your best interest in mind when He has you do something. No matter what you are feeling, you must act according to what He says.
God has great plans for you, but you can derail those plans by taking things into your own hands. Doing it your way, will dishonor God. Show the world that God is great, by doing what He asks you to do. This is the greatest honor you can give God.
I pray today that you will know what God asks of you; that you will trust God’s plans for you; that you will honor God with your trust and obedience; and that the world will see Jesus in and through you.
Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood–two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. He overlaid it with pure gold, both inside and out, and made a gold molding around it. Exodus 37:1-2
When people get a chance to meet someone of extreme high importance, most will want to be in their best outfit for the occasion. They want to put on a good appearance before the person they are meeting. Doing this shows honor and respect to the one they are meeting.
Some of the high dignitaries will not even meet with a person who is not dressed a certain way. They do not want to be disrespected in any way. There is an expectation in the meeting.
Moses was having Bezalel and others build the tabernacle and the articles to be used in the tabernacle. One of the major articles was the ark. This was the actual place that Moses and future priests would directly meet with God. As this was built, it was covered on the inside and outside with pure gold.
During the time of Moses, pure gold was the most precious stone available. It showed high honor, authority, wealth, position and more. The entire ark, both inside and out had a layer of gold upon it. This showed the value and position of meeting God–it was of the most importance and value of anything.
Since that time, that ark has been removed, however, Jesus set up a new temple and ark where a person can meet God. It is in the believer. Each and every believer and follower of Jesus can meet directly with God right where he is at.
The believer is to be covered inside and out with gold, the best that there is when he is meeting with God. This covering of gold is the blood of Jesus and His righteousness. When God sees the believer, He will see Jesus and allow Him in to meet together.
As a believer, you also carry the ark in you. You have direct access to meet with God, any time and every time you want. However, in order to meet with God, you must be made pure inside and out. You must be covered with Jesus–the gold of holiness and righteousness. This is the best and highest honor you can give God.
Have you allowed yourself to be covered with Jesus, in order to be ready to meet God with honor and respect? God is waiting to meet with you.
I pray today that you will know the salvation Jesus offers; that you will be covered with the righteousness of Jesus; that you will allow Jesus to make you pure and holy for God; and that you will take time to meet with God daily.
In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” Revelation 5:12
Throughout time there have been men and women who have been considered worthy of certain honor, wealth or power. They have lived lives that was very good for what they would receive or should receive.
Some have worked very hard to earn the money that they have received. Others have done very well at management and use of authority to be worthy of power. Some have helped others to a level to be worthy of honor.
However, no person has been worthy of everything, except one–Jesus. Jesus is the only person who was completely perfect, never doing anything wrong, yet was crucified on the cross for the wrongs of every person who ever lived. He has done more than any other many has ever done. Jesus is worthy to receive everything.
Two of the things listed that He is worthy to receive is power and honor. While most believers will agree that He is worthy to receive these things, many do not give Him these things.
Every believer needs to allow Jesus to have all power over his life. It is God who should be controlling every thought, word and action in the life of a believer. Yet, many believers do not give Jesus every area of their lives.
As this does not happen, they are also taking away His honor. Claiming to be a follower of Jesus and then purposefully walking in sin, is a dishonor to Jesus and removing His power.
Giving Jesus praise is easy, but giving Him power and honor takes a focused effort. It is done by how the believer lives his life for God.
Your life needs to be one that follows after Jesus in every area of life. Everything that you do must bring Jesus honor and power and praise. As you turn away from sin, you will bring Him honor and praise. As you tell others about Him, you will bring Him honor, power and praise. As you submit to His authority, you will give Him all power.
Do not be like some and only give power and honor in word, but do it in your actions. Show the world that you have given Him all power and honor. He is worthy of it all for dying for you.
I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will know what He is worthy of; that you will give Jesus all authority, power, honor, wealth, glory and praise; that your life will be lived for the glory of God.
