Revelation 1:5b-6 What Is Your Purpose?

Death Valley

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father–to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. Revelation 1:5b-6

Millions of people go through life wondering what their purpose in life is supposed to be. The age-old question of “why am I here?” is asked by people all over the earth, from every nation and age. They seek books and seminars to help them answer that question.

Some will answer that question with the thought that they are there to make money for themselves or for the children. Some will use their talents thinking their purpose is to entertain people. Purpose is often ‘found’ in building a business, politics, family, work, material things gained, or personal joy.

While many of these things may or may not be good, all of them are temporary, short-term purposes. These purposes are not the real reason a person is on this earth.

Man was created to live and work with God and to serve Him. When Adam and Eve sinned, bringing all of humanity down, God set into motion a plan to reverse the fall. Jesus was sent to remove all sin and restore mankind to who he was supposed to be.

Jesus saves people from their sins so that they may be a kingdom who serves God. That is the entire purpose of every person upon this earth–to serve God. In the process of serving God, one will love and serve others, building others up. They will no longer harm anyone, because they will turn away from all sin so that they may serve God.

Many believers will still ask the same question, but the answer is still the same–to serve God.

You may wonder what your purpose is and why you are here on this earth. As a believer in Jesus, your purpose is to serve God. To serve God means you will love Him with all of your heart and will be His witness to every person you meet.

Instead of asking what your purpose is, you can ask how can you serve God today. What can you do to be His kingdom and to build His kingdom?

Jesus died and rose again to free you from all sin so that you may serve God. That is your purpose on this earth. Are you serving Him?

I pray today that you will know the salvation Jesus provides; that you will know the purpose God has for you; that you will love and serve God with all of your abilities and heart; and that you will find your purpose in serving God.

Romans 6:22 You Are A Slave…With Benefits

But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. Romans 6:22

Since the 1700s when slavery was abolished, it has been looked down as a bad thing, which it is when it is one person owning another. In today’s society, most of the world despises the idea of slavery.

The reality, though, is that every person is a slave, whether they like it or not. They are a slave to sin.

There is not one person who cannot keep from sinning. People obey the law of sin very well. Take a look at how hard it is for a person to stop doing something on their own that is sinful to God.

Ultimately the obedience to sin brings about eternal death, after starting with separation from God. The only way to stop that separation from God and prevent eternal death is belief in Jesus Christ.

Once a person believes in Jesus Christ, he is no longer a slave to sin, but becomes a slave to God. One who has been made a slave, must obey the master, or the one who owns him.

Again, in this world, there are many people who do not really like the idea of being a slave to anyone, yet, that is what a believer is. Being a slave to God means that no matter what He says, one will do it, He is the commander and head boss.

There is a great benefit to being a slave to God. That benefit is freedom from sin and being given eternal life. No longer is there a death sentence on the life of a person who believes in Jesus.

Obeying God is actually an easy thing to do. There are only two main commands that God has for every person: to love God with everything in him and to love his neighbor in the same way.

As a believer, you must not look at the commands and rules of God as being a bad thing or heavy burden. His commands are there to bring you life…eternal life. There is no greater benefit than eternal life!

Do not fight being a slave and striving to do your own thing. Being a willing, loving slave to God. Do whatever He tells you. The benefits in the end are worth it.

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will be a slave to God; that you will obey all that God commands; and that you will know the benefits you have in Jesus.

Romans 6:6-7 Dead To Sin

For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin–because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. Romans 6:6-7

Paul had just finished talking about not sinning any more. He talked about how Jesus died to take away all sin. Now he tells believers that they are no longer a slave to sin.

One thing that every person must deal with in this life is sin. Sin has a grip on every person that cannot be individually overcome. Sin is a part of this life for every person. Each person is enslaved to sin, to the point that they cannot help but sin.

However, when a person dies, that changes.

When a person is dead, he is free from the things of this earth. Every concern that a person had when living is no longer a concern. There are no more bills to pay, no more sickness to deal with, no more enemies, no more getting up early for work, no more vehicle breakdowns or anything else in this life. There is also no longer the ability to sin. The person is dead. It is over.

In Christ Jesus, each person who believes in Him, dies. Their character is crucified and dies. With that the old things of this life die with him. The need to sin also dies in the crucifixion.

Once a person dies with Jesus, he is raised again to a new life. That life is no longer bound by sin. There is no longer a reason to sin. All a person has to do is focus on living for God, and the power of sin will go away. Living for God will destroy the need to sin.

Every morning you get up, you must realize that you are rising to a new life in Jesus Christ. Live for God with everything in you. Focus on Him and Him alone. As you do that, the need to sin will go away. You will no longer have the time to sin, because all of your time will be spent on living for God.

You are free from sin. Now all you have to do is live like you are free from all sin. Stay dead to sin, don’t go back into it.

I pray today that you will know the life Jesus has for you; that you will focus on living for God; that you will know the freedom from sin that Jesus provides; and that you be ruled by God alone.
