Romans 8:9 What Spirit Lives In You?

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. Romans 8:9

While in school or college, a person may have some school spirit in him. He is the person who dresses up and dyes his hair with the school’s colors. He is at every game, cheering the loudest.

This type of spirit can be found in people who are going all out for some thing, no matter what school, business, organization or anything else it is.

In talking about flesh and the spirit, Paul tells the people that they are no longer a part of the realm of the flesh, but of the Spirit. This is only if they belong to Christ.

The spirit of the flesh is anything that is of this world and not of God. It is being focused upon self and what is in it for self as the final result. Focusing on self is always looking at the temporary and is most often sin and against God.

God’s Spirit is always looking at things with eternity in focus. He is always seeking ways to make a person more like Jesus–holy and perfect–ready for eternity. He always wants a person to turn away from selfish sin to holiness and life.

Some in the church claim to be of Christ and have God’s Spirit in them, but they are continuing to purposefully live by the flesh in sin. Rather than live for God, they continue to live in selfish, sinful ways.

The true believer will always be seeking to live more for God, seeking to be more like Jesus. He will live by the Spirit of God in holiness and righteousness.

Only you and God know what spirit you are living by, God’s or the flesh. If you have chosen to believe in and follow Jesus, then allow His Spirit to lead and guide you in how to live.

Living to please self or by the flesh will only bring about death and separation from God for eternity. Make a conscious choice to live by His Spirit, so that you will continue to belong to Christ and will inherit eternal life, rather than death.

Have the Spirit of Christ and live by the Spirit of Christ.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will have the Spirit of Christ living in you; that you will obey God’s Spirit in your life; that you will truly belong to Christ; and that God will give you strength to deny living by the flesh of this world.
