This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. Ezekiel 37:5
God brought Ezekiel to a valley full of dry bones and asked him if those bones could live. Ezekiel states that only God knows the answer to that. God then tells him to tell the bones that He will breath life into them and they will live again.
Bones are a sign of something that is dead. All the flesh that was on the bones are gone. All the blood vessels that surrounded the bones are gone. Nothing is left but death.
Seeing a whole field of dry bones, would leave a person in horror or sadness. It is a sign of a lot of death. All hope of life appears to be gone and nothing can be done about it. It is just a large open graveyard that sits on top of the ground rather than being buried.
People live their lives just like the dead bones lying on the ground. They go through the motions of being alive, but in reality are dead. They are dead in sins, appearing to be enjoying the best of this life. All are living without any real hope or purpose in this world. Although they are physically walking around on this planet, they are dead in spirit, dead like those dry bones in the field.
Once a person believes in the work of Jesus, God puts on a new life on the person. He is clothed with the righteousness and life of Jesus. God gives him a new heart of flesh. There is new hope and life that was never there before.
If you are going through life and feeling like there is no purpose or real living, you need to give Jesus a chance to show you a new life. Following God can give you the real meaning of life on this earth. You do not have to go through each day with no hope, thinking it is all worthless with no meaning.
Life is there for the taking. With Jesus you will have joy and love that will strengthen you. You will become a new creation in Jesus. Your old bones will be renewed with new life. Do not remain dead in sins and be a pile of dry bones.
I pray today that you will know Jesus personally; that you will accept the life God has for you; that God will fill you with a new life and purpose; and that your bones will live in the power of God.
“Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” Romans 13:14
Paul had just made the statement that every believer must wake up and put off all types of sinful acts. These sinful acts are called the deeds of darkness. Now he states that instead of acting in these sinful ways one is to put on Jesus Christ and not even think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.
Many believers know that they should not be doing anything sinful. Often people will have old habits that they cannot seem to break. The sinful act has a bind on them that does not seem to leave.
In the verse today it gives a very simple two part answer. The first part is to clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ. This is to make Jesus Christ The Lord and Master of your life. He is the one who is to be in absolute control of your life, not you. He is the one who is to control every part of your life–every move, thought, action, and word you make.
The second part is to not even think about how to gratify the desires of your flesh. The flesh is the sinful part of human beings, not the physical flesh. These desires are selfish and sinful against God and others. Here it states to not even think about it.
The mind is very powerful. It can control your attitudes, abilities and actions. If you set your mind to something it can usually be done, as long as your mind is willing to overcome every obstacle. This includes sin. For most people not committing an actual murder is easy because they do not really think about actually doing it. However, with jealousy, it is easy because it starts with thinking about what you do not have and what others do have. Sexual sins start out with a thought and builds from there.
Keep your mind on Jesus. Don’t give any room for sinful thoughts. Don’t even allow room for gratifying the sinful nature in your life. Think about Jesus and what He would do. Think about what Jesus did for you. Transform your mind to that of Jesus and you will overcome sin.
I pray today that you will clothe yourself with Jesus; that you will turn away from all sin; that you will only think about Jesus; and that God will strengthen you to keep Jesus Lord of your life.
“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires: but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” Romans 8:5
How a person lives is a visual showing of what his mind is focused upon. What the mind is focused upon is a sign of what is important to a person.
In the business world, successful business people always talk about having a vision and a plan to meet that vision. With those things it will happen. If a person has his mind on having fun and relaxing, that is all that will happen and will not get any work accomplished.
Paul talks about living to the flesh or to the Spirit. Both show where the mind is focused.
Living for the flesh is the living for the here and now. It is focused on immediate pleasure. This is what the world is doing. They want pleasure and they want it right now. They will say do not put of pleasure till tomorrow. This is sinful selfishness and does not look at what God wants.
Those who live according to the Spirit are seeking what God wants in their lives. They are not seeking to please themselves but to please God. Their focus is on how to live for God. It is focused on serving God and reaching others for Jesus.
When your mind is focused on Jesus, you will not be focused on doing anything sinful. You will be able to resist the temptations that come your way. When Jesus was in the desert fasting He was able to easily resist the devil since He had been focused on God and His Word, not on the hunger and thirst He was feeling, the flesh.
How are you living today? Are you living to get your own pleasure or even someone else’s pleasure? Or are you living to please God?
What is your mind focused on? Is it focused on your own physical desires? Or is it focused on the desires of God for you and others? Be led by the Holy Spirit in everything you do.
I pray today that you will live according to the Holy Spirit; that you will know the direction the Holy Spirit is leading you; that you will not seek sinful desires of the flesh; and that your heart and mind will follow God.
“Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” John 3:6
Nicodemus, one of the leading Pharisees, came to Jesus to ask Him some questions. He noticed that there was something different about Jesus and that God must be working in and through Him. Jesus then tells him about the need to be born again. As anyone would be, Nicodemus was confused and asked how that could happen. Jesus talked about the need to be born of the Spirit.
Every human mother has always given birth to another human. No human has ever given birth to anyone different or anything different. It is the natural way of things.
Along with the birth of humans, every person on the earth has given birth to worldly pleasures in their own life. The world does not know how to give birth to real life.
The life the world looks at and thinks is life, is in reality death. It is a slow death that will last for eternity. The pleasures of this world only last a short time and then are over.
Men and women have searched for meaning and pleasure in life. No matter what is found it has always been an empty meaning and pleasure. All the good words, self-help books, and good moral teachings will leave a person short of real life. Only in Jesus can there be found any meaning or real pleasure.
Many churches have even bought into this type of thinking. They try to make the church look fun and good to the world rather than pointing people to Jesus. It is the sinner-friendly church. There is no real spiritual change in their lives. Only Jesus can bring about real life.
God is Spirit. Only He can give life to the spirit of a person. When God gives this new life to a person through belief in Jesus, that person is truly living life and knows true meaning and purpose in this life.
Are you born of the Spirit? Or are you just born of the flesh? Are you telling others about being born of the Spirit? Or are you just speaking the ways of this world?
I pray today that you will know true spiritual birth in Jesus; that you will be spiritually alive; that you will turn from all sinful ways; and that you will turn from sinful fleshly desires.
