1 Samuel 23:1-2 Seeking God’s Guidance

When David was told, “Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are looting the threshing floors,” he inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” The LORD answered him, “Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah.” 1 Samuel 23:1-2

David had been on the run from King Saul, who was out to kill him. He had a group of men who went with him to help him fight any battles he was in. At some point he was told that the Philistines had fought against Keilah. David then asked God if he should go and fight the Philistines and God told him he was to do that.

David had been a warrior for many years already, winning many battles. People were talking about how he had killed tens of thousands in battles. He was a great war hero. Yet, before ever stepping into a battle, he asked God if he should go to battle. He kept seeking God’s guidance in what to do.

There are people who are very successful at doing certain things. They just go out and do something and always seem to succeed in their own abilities. Very seldom to never do they ever ask God what they should do or not do.

You, yourself, probably have certain things that you are very good at doing, just like David was very good at being a warrior and killing the enemy. Doing that one thing may have become so common and easy for you that you no longer seek God’s guidance in what to do or not to do. You just go out and do it.

As a believer, however, you must rely on God’s direction and guidance. With David, there were times when God told him not to fight, while at other times he was to fight. You also must seek God in what you do each and every time.

Although you may be very capable of doing something, there may be times when God does not want you to do it. Allow God to direct your actions each and every day. Do not just automatically take things into your own hands. Trust God to guide you in what is best for your life each day.

I pray today that God will reveal to you what He wants you to do; that you will seek the guidance of God daily; that you will only do what God wants you to do; and that God will use you in mighty ways.

1 Samuel 17:45 Fighting The Enemy

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” 1 Samuel 17:45

The Philistines had made an offer to the Israelites to have one man from each side fight together, whoever won the fight, that side would be the conquerors. Goliath was the chosen warrior for the Philistines. No one was willing to fight him, because he was a giant and a seasoned warrior.

David’s brothers were at the battle also. David was sent to bring them some food. When he saw the giant, he was willing to fight him. Goliath threatened him with many threats, but David just said he was coming against him in the name of God. With just a simple sling and one stone, David killed Goliath and the Israelites won the battle.

In today’s society most people do not have to physically go to war against another person. Only those who are in the military have to deal with that type of situation. However, there are many other battles against an enemy that every believing person must face on a daily basis.

You, along with every believer, have at least one enemy…the devil. He is seeking to get you to sin and fall away from God. He comes at you directly or through others, in your thoughts, and in your physical life. Temptations are thrown your way every day. It is a great battle to fight off these temptations of the enemy.

This battle is for your soul. It is up to you as to who will win the battle.

You must not try to fight the battle in your own strength using the weapons of this world. You must fight it in the power of God. It is God who the enemy is defying, not you. Allow God to win the battle in your life.

Do not give the enemy a chance at taking you down. Take the initiative and run forward first and take him out. Kill the temptations to sin and win the battle.

I pray today that God will give you courage to fight the enemy; that you will fight in God’s power and way; that you will allow God to destroy all temptation to sin; and that God will win the battle for your soul.
