Exodus 25:1 Give Because You Want To

The LORD said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from everyone whose heart prompts them to give.” Exodus 25:1

Giving is something that brings much controversy. People wonder if they should give or not give. And then the question how much should they give, and when should they give.

Different organizations, that are not directly Christian, are always asking for donations and gifts to be given. People wonder if they should give. The world will often put pressure upon people to give. They set up advertisements to get people to give that lay a guilt upon the person who chooses not to give.

Some people give to look good to others or to get a tax write off. They are not giving so much as to help, but in order to get something for themselves.

While the Israelites were being led around in the desert by God, He had Moses ask the people for an offering. This asking was not a demand, but just a simple request. The only people who were to give were those whose hearts had prompted them to give. There was to be no guilt trip laid upon those who did not give or could not give. There was also no pressure put on the people, it was just a simple request.

In many churches, there is pressure to give. Speakers often preface the request with getting God’s blessings or the absolute need for each person to give. While it may be needed and God will bless the giver, it must also come from a willing and joyful heart, not to look good or because of peer pressure.

A gift that does not come with joy, is a worthless gift.

There will come days when you will be asked to give. You have to seek God and choose for yourself if you should give and how much you should give. If you are feeling in your heart that you should give, then give. Never give because you have to give. Never give under peer pressure. Never give just to look good. Never give just because you are told to give.

Give with a joyful heart. Give because you get a chance to take part in building God’s kingdom. Give because God has given you eternal life. Give because Jesus has forgiven your sins. Give because your heart tells you to give.

How are you giving today?

I pray today that you will know what God has given you; that you will hear God’s guidance to you in giving; that you will give to God with a joyful heart; and that you will give for the right reasons.
