Romans 3:20 The Purpose Of The Law

Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. Romans 3:20

In every nation and community there are laws. These laws dictate what a person can and cannot do. When a person obeys these man-made laws, he is considered a good, law-abiding person, a good person.

Most of the laws are aimed at the goal of showing people what they cannot do, in order to keep them out of trouble. It shows them what is wrong, in order that they may do what is right.

Paul says that God’s laws reveal what is wrong in people–sin. Obeying them does not make one righteous before God.

Without a law, a person cannot know if what he is doing is right or wrong. If there is no law, he cannot be held accountable for wrong actions. God laid down the law to point out what is required by every person.

If a person obeyed the law perfectly from birth on, he would be a righteous person. However, no person can obey the law perfectly from day one. Everyone breaks the law at some point or another, most on multiple times on a daily basis.

As soon as one breaks the law, he is condemned to death. Jesus provided a way to remove that condemnation by His death on the cross. Those who believe in what Jesus did, can now strive to live by the law, not to be saved, but because of what He did.

God’s law now reveals what is wrong in a person and guides them how to live for God. Every believer needs to be aware of what God’s law says, so that he may know what he is doing right or wrong and change accordingly.

As a believer, you have faith in what Jesus did for you. Do not ignore His laws and commands. Realize that those laws are there to guide you in how to live for God, now that Jesus has given you a new life.

Do not attempt to obey the laws in order to gain God’s favor or to be saved. You have already broke the law and stand condemned before God. Instead accept the forgiveness Jesus provides and begin to live for God according to His law. Then, allow God’s law to reveal what is wrong in your life and allow God to change you.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will know the forgiveness Jesus provides; that you will know God’s law in your heart; that God will strengthen and guide you to obey His law; and that God will change you from the inside out.

Romans 3:20 Purpose of the Law

“Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.” Romans 3:20

There are two types of people when it comes to looking at the laws of God. One group states you must follow every little rule or else you are in trouble. The other group ignores God’s rules altogether.

The group that ignores the law, looks at Jesus and the grace and salvation He provides. They believe that you do not have to follow the law anymore.

This then brings up the question as to why did God ever give the law? What is it’s purpose? If one cannot be saved by following the law, why have it?

The reason for the law is to show what sin really is. Unless a person is told what not to do, he cannot be held accountable for doing it. For this reason God has laid down the rules.

If a person follows the law perfectly from birth until death, he would have no need for the salvation Jesus provided. He would be perfect in himself. Yet, this is not the case. Every person has broken the law and deserves the punishment of death.

With this judgment against every person, the need for Jesus comes up. He is the only one who lived a perfect life. He is the one who paid the punishment of death for your sins. It is through Jesus that you can be saved.

The law was set up to help you realize that you are sinning against God. It also reveals your need for the salvation Jesus provides you. Without the law you would not realize how much of a sinner you really are. You would think that you are a good person, even though it was not true.

Look to the law to see where you are failing God. Realize all the sins that you have done and continue to do. Then, look to the salvation Jesus provides. Trust Jesus for His cleansing of your sinful record.

I pray today that you will see the sin in your life; that you will realize how corrupt you are; that you will look to Jesus to be cleansed of your sin; that you will not try to be righteous on your own; and that you will live for Jesus in His righteousness.
