Zephaniah 1:12 Complacency Will Be Punished

Pointing hand

At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, ‘The Lord will do nothing either good or bad.’ Zephaniah 1:12

Most people feel as if their actions or reactions are only about themselves and do not affect anyone else. They feel that they can do, think or say whatever they want and that they will be safe, because no one else can see them or do anything about it.

With having this attitude, it is common for many to not do or say anything when they see something bad occurring. They accept the bad as just something normal.

God warns of a time when He will go through Jerusalem and punish those who are complacent. They are compared to the dregs of wine leftover.

Allowance for sin and sinful lifestyles has come into being a commonplace feeling inside the church and the lives of many people. It is common for people to look past sin as being evil and hatred towards God, to it just being who someone is. There is no call to repent or turn from sin in the world or in the church.

Many have become complacent about sin in their lives or in the lives of others, thinking that God will do nothing about it. Since Jesus has not returned in nearly two thousand years and done anything, people feel that they are free to do what they want. Sin is allowed to run rampant and unchecked by many inside the church.

Very few will stand up and call out sin within the church, not wanting to offend anyone or drive them away. They have become complacent about how horrible sin is in the life of a believer. They feel as though God will not punish the believer for sin in his life.

There is coming a day when Jesus will return to judge the world and those in it of sin. It may take time to arrive, but it will arrive and those who are complacent about sin in their lives will be punished.

Take a moment to examine your life and see if you are complacent with sin. Are there areas that you have accepted as that it is just who you are and you cannot change?

Seek God and His Holy Spirit to reveal how you may be complacent. Seek to have a heart that burns after God and His ways. Do not allow yourself to become complacent, but be on fire for God’s holiness.

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that God will give you strength to flee all sin; that you will repent of sin in your life; and that you will live on fire for God.

Revelation 3:15 Lukewarm

“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!” Revelation 3:15

Jesus brings some harsh words to the church of Laodicea. This church was active in doing some deeds, but He calls them neither hot nor cold, but in the next verse lukewarm. God wants them to be either hot or cold.

Being hot, in God’s eyes, is one who is actively running after God. He will seek God in everything; try to witness to everyone; do all that his hands can do; and worship God at all times. He is a person who is on fire for God. He is exited about God. He lives for God.

The person who is cold is the one who does not seek God at all; has no room in his life for God; he even hates God; and does not try to do anything for God. His life is completely dead with no signs of a life with God in it.

What does it mean to be lukewarm? When you use water in a sink and it is only lukewarm it can cause problems. It is not hot enough to help kill germs when you wash something, nor is it cold enough to enjoy a good glass of cool water on a hot day. Lukewarm has little value, thus it is usually tossed out.

People who are neither hot, nor cold are indifferent about God. They will not get excited about God, but will not directly deny God; they will do some good deeds, but only when convenient for themselves; they will worship the three songs on Sunday morning, but never during the week on their own; and many other ways are not running for God. These people will be tossed out by God.

Today you need to be hot for God. If you are cold, you are against God and will die in your sins. If you hot, you will be doing what God wants for you to do and will have life abundantly.

Seek God in everything you do. Seek out ways to serve God and others daily. Give worship to God at all times. Be running after and for God. Let your light shine brightly for the world to see. These things are not to earn your salvation, but to give thanks to God for what He has done for you.

I pray that today God will stir your heart to be hot for Him; that you will choose to be hot for God; that God will not have to spit you out; and that God will use you to build His kingdom and bring Him glory.
