2 Corinthians 2:14 Are You Allowing God To Use You?

But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. 2 Corinthians 2:14

The majority of people around the world do not really like to be led by someone else. People like to consider themselves free and be able to go where they want to, as they want to. Some of those actually like to be the leaders of others.

On top of this, no one likes to be led around as a captive. Being a captive means one is a prisoner and has no rights.

Paul gives thanks to God that he, and others with him, are being led around like a captive by God and being used to spread knowledge of Jesus everywhere.

At the moment a person chooses to follow Jesus, he gives up his personal rights before God. All authority and power is handed over to God to do as He pleases. He is now captive to God.

As God is given that position of authority over one’s life, He begins to lead that person around as needed. The believers life is changed to where it no longer looks or smells like that of the world, but something different. It has the look and smell of Jesus.

Just a perfume permeates a room that a lady walks into, so does the smell of Jesus permeate anywhere a believer walks into.

The purpose of this aroma is to spread the gospel message of Jesus to everyone in this dying world. It is to let people know that there is a hope and a life that they can have as a gift from God that will last for eternity.

A believer, who understands this great gift, will be thankful to God that he is being led and used by God to touch lives.

If you have chosen to believe in Jesus, allow God to lead you around to spread the message of Jesus. Everywhere you go people should be able to notice the smell that you are a follower of Jesus. There should never be any doubt in their minds.

Now as God is leading you, give thanks to Him that He is using you. Do not see it as a chore or a drudgery, but as a great honor. As He uses you, lives are being changed and saved.

Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will be led by God; that you will be used by God to spread the gospel message; that those around you will know that you believe in Jesus; and that God will draw many to Jesus through you.

2 Corinthians 2:15 A Pleasing Aroma

For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 2 Corinthians 2:15

An aroma is a smell that something gives off. The smell can be something good or bad, depending on who is smelling it and what that person likes or dislikes.

Every person has memories of some aroma that they have smelled at some point. Some of those were good and some were very bad. If anyone has smelled the smell of a skunk spray, it is usually seen as an extremely bad smell. Smelling a baby’s dirty diaper is a bad smell.

While smelling some perfumes can be great. Smelling the aroma of a pie baking in the oven is great. Some like the smell of pine needles in a forest.

As one thinks about past smells, he may feel as though he can literally smell that aroma right now, even though there is nothing there to smell.

Paul said that he and the Corinthians were a pleasing aroma Christ to this world.

Looking at some people, they are not always a pleasing aroma. People living in sin can bring about a bad aroma to those near them. They are an aroma of death and decay, with no hope left.

Believers are to be giving off a different aroma. It is an aroma of life and freedom. One that brings about joy and life to the heart at smelling. Just as smelling the favorite dessert or meal brings a smile to a person, so the smell of a believer should bring about a smile to someone else.

The life of a believer should be marked with joy, love, compassion, grace, hope, and mercy. These are things that are a pleasing aroma. They also are the aroma of Jesus. He was all these things and more when He walked on this earth.

As you walk around on this earth, you will be giving off an aroma, and not just the aroma of your body. It is an aroma of life or death, living for God or living for self.

When people walk around you, what will they smell?

Is it the aroma of death, just like most of the world and what they are giving off? This is one of no hope and filled with sin.

Or are you giving off the aroma of life and hope that is found in Jesus?

I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will live your life for God; that you will give off the aroma of Jesus to those around you; and that your life will be like that of Jesus.

2 Corinthians 2:16 An Aroma Of Life And Death

“To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?” 1 Corinthians 2:16

Just before this verse Paul stated that all believers are led as captives by God in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses believers to spread an aroma of Him everywhere. Christ is showing believers off to the world and to Satan. He had triumphed over death and brought all to life.

The devil thought he had beat Jesus when Jesus died on the cross, but three days later He arose in triumph. Whenever a person starts to believe in Jesus, it just shows the victory that He has over the devil and the world.

As a believer walks around in this world, he will bring an aroma with him. To most people, this aroma will be one of condemnation and death. God is trying to reach the lost. His Holy Spirit is working at convicting them of their sins. It is for this reason that the world hates Christians. All believers bring about a conviction that goes against what those in the world believe. The world feels that believers will bring them death. If they become believers they will no longer be able to live the “fun” life they are living of sin.

When one believer is around another believer they both smell the aroma of life. They know that there is hope, life, and a future in Jesus. Yes as a believer, they will have to give up some things, but it will be worth it in the end.

Think of it like when you are around someone who has on some very strong perfume. After a while you walk away, but the aroma of that perfume is still with you. Others can smell that perfume on you.

As you go through life, what aroma are you bringing to those you are around? If you are following Jesus, you should be bringing the aroma He has.

Do not be surprised when some think of it as death, while others enjoy it because it is of life. It is death to sin, and an opening to eternal life.

I pray today that you will smell of the life Jesus gives; that others will be drawn to that life in Jesus; that God will strengthen you to turn from all sin; and that God will build His kingdom through you.
