In God we boast all day long, and praise Your name forever. Psalm 44:8
Boasting is something that many people do. The majority boast it their own abilities or accomplishments. They are extremely proud of what they have done and want everyone around them to know it.
Sometimes this boasting of self is found in boasting in other family members, such as children, or boasting in employees. While this can look like it is not boasting about self, it is often pride of what one did in training a child or the worker. It is boasting that one did a great job himself, more than what the other person did.
The psalmist states that he boasts in God. His focus for boasting is in what God does, giving Him praise.
Realizing who one really is helps realize what one can really do or cannot do. While man is made in God’s image, he is limited in what he can do. The reality is that man cannot do anything without God’s help in doing it.
It is God who gives man life, breath, strength and abilities. If God did not give any of those things, man would be unable to do anything at all.
If he cannot do anything at all, then he has no reason to boast in self or his abilities.
This brings his focus back to God. The believer realizes that it is God who gives the abilities and strength to do things. It is God who is able to accomplish anything, not self.
Boasting in God is a good thing to do. It gives Him all the credit for everything that is done, rather than trying to put it upon self. One cannot come to end of talking about all the good things that God has done and is doing in one’s own life, much less in the rest of the world.
Instead of looking at self, try looking at God. Think about all the good things that God has done in your life. Now give Him praise for it and boast about it to everyone you meet.
Boast about who God is. Boast about God’s great love, forgiveness and mercy. This is being the witness that Jesus has told you to be. It is not about you, but it is all about God and what He has done and is doing. This is where there is good boasting being done.
Who will you boast about today?
I pray today that you will know what God has done for you; that you will know who God is; that you will tell people what God has done for you; and that you will focus your words and life upon God and His word.
