But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him, and consulted the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him. 2 Chronicles 10:8
Desire to please those one’s own age is a common factor. They seek guidance and wisdom from their peers and reject the wisdom of those older.
Often this is done because people want to try something different or be different. The challenge with this is that most people who are younger do not have the experience to guide correctly. They see things as though they are the kings of the world and are the wisest.
It is not that the younger generation does not have any wisdom, but often it is not the best. Sometimes they are focused on power, wealth and fame, rather than what is best for everyone all around.
When Solomon had died, his son Rehoboam had become king. When he asked the elders as to how to rule the people, they stated that he should lighten the load of the people. Rehoboam did not like that advice, so he went to the young men his age. They told him to make the load heavier. In the end it split the nation of Israel.
People often seek advice all the time. While seeking advice, they will only take what sounds good and easy, but refuse to accept advice who have been down that path or understand the situation. Younger people often believe that they know what is best.
Believers who have been around a while, and have grown in the Lord, have learned a few things. They have some Godly wisdom that they have gained over the years. Those who have been believers for a longer period of time must be willing to share the wisdom they have learned with others. Those who are younger believers, must learn from those who have walked with the Lord for a time.
There will be times you seek wisdom and direction. Be careful on what wisdom you accept. Study God’s word and seek God in prayer. Check the wisdom that is given to you against the word of God. Does it make you more like Jesus and build His kingdom or not?
Do not just accept things that will be only of personal gain, but accept the wisdom that will build God’s kingdom and make you more like Jesus.
If you are among those who have been around a while, share what God has taught you with others. Do not keep the wisdom to yourself.
I pray today that you will know Jesus as your Savior; that you will seek God’s wisdom in your life; that you will share God’s wisdom with others; and that you will seek to be more like Jesus everyday and build His kingdom.
