You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice. Exodus 23:2
Walking down the sidewalk in the middle of a major city is often filled with thousands of people. Crowds of people are so thick that it is difficult to walk a different direction than what the crowd is moving. Pressure is put upon everyone to flow in the same direction and at the same speed. Moving a different direction will slow a person down and sometimes even stop them.
God had Moses tell the people that they are not to follow a crowd in doing something that is evil, nor were they to testify in the same way as a crowd to bring about corrupt justice.
Peer pressure is often thought of being only among teens and younger children. Yet peer pressure is found among adults. There is constant pressure to think, look and act certain ways, both good and bad. Advertisements make it look like everyone purchases something and so the one watching it is pressured into purchasing it also.
The world has the majority of people walking in sinful ways. Sin is made to look and sound good. Anyone who does not act in that sin is considered unloving, uncaring, hateful and mean. The pressure to give in and follow the crowds is very great. No one wants to be left out alone, going against the flow.
Believers are to walk on the straight and narrow path that very few will walk upon. It will be one that flows against the crowds of people. Fleeing sin, rather than embracing it is one of the marks of a believer. Resisting the temptation to go with the crowd in sin is what God has called every believer to do. They are to live holy and separate from the world.
All around you is peer pressure to live and act in certain ways. Some of those ways are sinful and against God’s word. With the crowds leading down the path of death you must make a choice as to whether you will follow their path to death or God’s path to life. Make the choice today that you will not give into the peer pressure of the crowds and sin against God. Be holy and righteous, set apart for Him and go against the flow of the world.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will open your eyes to the crowd’s ways of living; that God will give you strength to go against the crowd; and that you will live the righteous life God has called you to live.
