So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, “What is that you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?” Genesis 29:25
Deception in something that occurs all the time. Scam emails and phone calls strive to deceive people into giving up their hard-earned money for nothing of real value. No one likes to be deceived, yet many try to deceive others in various ways to get what they want.
Jacob had served Laban seven years to be able to marry Rachel. After serving and being given a wife, he woke the next morning to find it was Leah, not Rachel. He asked Laban why he deceived him.
Earlier in his life Jacob deceived his brother and father. Now deception came to him.
On the outside deceiving a person often appears to just affect person and seems somewhat harmless. Many times it is done just as a joke to be funny, but more often it is done to get something in the wrong way. When a person gets what one wants it seems that the person got away with it and that there are no consequences.
Eventually the one who deceives will also be deceived by someone else. Just the idea that one can use deception to get something is showing that one has already been deceived by Satan in believing a lie. Others will betray the one who deceives and do their own deception.
Followers of Christ are to be honest and true at all times in everything that they say and do. Deception should never be a part of their life. Jesus was always honest and true in everything He did. Believers are to live their lives in the same way. As they live that way, they do not have to fear deception except from the enemy of their souls.
It is easy for you to be able to see things that are trying to deceive you into believing a lie. Following those same patterns can be easy to do to get what you want. Live your life in truth so that you do not deceive others and bring on deception against you. God can show you the way to live your life in His truth and reveal those who are trying to deceive you.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will reveal ways you are being deceptive towards others; that you will live a life of truth as Jesus did; that God will give you strength to make right choices in your life; and that God will meet all of your needs without your needing to deceive others.
