And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” Genesis 11:4
Having a name that everyone knows is a dream of many people. It shows that one has made it and is successful at something that everyone recognizes. Some will do whatever it takes to get their name known, either good or bad, right or wrong. It is all about self and building self up.
It is recorded that after the flood the people got together to build a great city to make a name for themselves. They did not want to be scattered over the whole earth.
Focus on self is the priority of the world. Taking care of self at the expense of others is acceptable. It is all about building oneself up to be known.
Building things bigger, better, faster is the focus of the world so that one looks better and is well known by all. This occurs even in things that are service oriented. It is more about how one looks than what is being done to help others out.
As one focuses upon building self up God is pushed out of the picture. Self becomes god and God is ignored. When this occurs God will always step in and take control.
People were created by God to be in fellowship with Him and to live the way He wants them to live. They are to live to serve Him and others, not self. Building up a kingdom here on this earth will only crumble in the end, bring about death when Jesus returns.
Believers are to live for God and do what He desires, making and revealing a name for Him, not self.
When you do the things that you do, you must ask yourself why you are doing those things. Are you doing them to build yourself up and make a name for yourself? Or are you doing them to serve God and others and lift Christ up? Do not be like the world and build an earthly kingdom. Live for God so that He will be able to lift you up in the right time and the right way. Gain a name that God knows and allow God to guide your whole life.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will know your name; that the world will know you as a servant of God; that God will not have to move you because of your being selfish; and that God will build you up in His kingdom.
