If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it. Genesis 4:7
Years ago salesmen would go door to door trying to get people to purchase their products or services. They would knock on the doors to try and get people to answer so that they could make a sale. People had to make a choice as to whether they would answer the door or not, to be tempted to buy something or not.
Moses records God telling Cain that if he does well, he would be accepted, but if he did the wrong thing, sin would be waiting for him at the door desiring to take him. He is to rule over the sin trying to get him.
Choices have to be made every day by every person. Every choice has a consequence attached to it and often will have other choices rise up to be made as a result.
As a person makes a choice to do what is right, it will usually cause other choices to rise up to continue to do what is right. The moment a wrong choice is made, there comes a temptation to continue to make wrong choices to cover up what was done wrong.
It is at the door of one’s heart and mind that sin knocks trying to trip one up. Sin knows when one is stepping closer to sin and will push harder to enter one’s life.
Instead of answering the door to bad choices and sin, one must run to God and obey His leading. God will lead the believer in making the right choice and in doing well. Then temptation to sin will have no power over the believer.
In the process of you making choices, sin will try to come knocking on your door. Making the choice to follow God will push sin further away. When you are listening to God, you will not hear the knock of sin at your door. The moment you chose to make a bad choice and step towards sin, sin will knock at your door to trip you into that sin. Flee sin and run after God. Make the choices that He will lead you in and keep sin out of your life. Don’t answer the door to sin, but overcome it by the power of God.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that God will guide you in making right choices; that God will make you aware of when sin is knocking at your door; that you will not answer the door to sin in your life; and that you will always do what is right in God’s eyes.
