Then I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and it was a sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten it, my stomach became bitter. Revelation 10:10
Food comes in many different types of flavors. Most contain a flavor that stays consistent while eating and after eating, however there are some that change a bit as one is eating or afterwards. On the outside, the food may taste one way, but inside is completely different. Not knowing what is coming can change the feelings about eating more of that food.
John says that he was told to eat a book that an angel had. As he ate the book, it was sweet, but after eating the book, his stomach turned bitter.
The world works hard at getting people to eat of its rules and regulations on how to live. At first taste, the liberal ways of the world appear to taste good. Once taken and swallowed, the ways of the world bring about depression, sickness and ultimately death, a very bitter food to swallow.
Looking at the surface stories of the Bible it appears to be something very sweet. It shows hope and salvation. It shows that God is love, is forgiving, is caring. People love that part of the Bible but will often ignore what else the Bible says.
Along with being loving, God is also a very strict judge. The opposite side of the hope is also the judgement of eternal punishment. That is a bitter pill to swallow for most people. It goes against the worldly belief that God is only love and will never judge. Many will ignore parts of the Bible to avoid the bitter parts.
Believers must take in all of the Bible, both the sweet and bitter parts. God put it in there to build His people up.
There are things that you have eaten that are sweet and things that are bitter. With that you have chosen somethings to avoid eating because of how they taste. One thing that you must eat of is God’s word. As you take in God’s word, there will be some parts that are very sweet, while other parts will be very bitter. Do not neglect any of it. Allow all of God’s word to build you and change you into the image of Christ. Let the world know what God’s word says.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will have a love for all of God’s word; that you will eat of all of God’s word; and that God’s word will change your life.
