how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Hebrews 9:14
Keeping clean is necessary in order to do certain jobs. Doctors and cooks must be willing to wash their hands with warm soapy water to keep the dirt and filth from contaminating others. If one does not keep clean, then filth and sickness can be spread, endangering the lives of others, along with themselves. Yet, while this is true, many ignore the required washing.
As the author of Hebrews compares the Old Testament sanctuary with Christ, he asks how much more will the blood of Christ cleanse one from sin and dead deeds so that one can serve God. This was done when Christ offered Himself as pure and holy to God.
Every person is guilty of doing something wrong at some point in their lives. The world looks at the wrong as just being human and moves on without a care. Often the world will even deny that what was done was wrong.
Once someone has done something wrong, it weighs heavy upon their conscience, always remembering what was done. In order to deal with that heavy conscience, the world will turn to drugs, more sin or suicide. It is too heavy for one to bear.
Many in the church continue to bear their sins. As a result, they do not serve God in or outside the church. Their conscience weighs too heavy upon them. Rather than carrying that burden of sin, believers are to trust Jesus to remove that sin.
Once it is removed, Jesus will also cleanse the conscience of having done wrong. It lifts the weight of sin allowing one to serve God with a clean heart and clean conscience.
Just as each day you wash yourself to be clean so that you can be able to do your work, you must be cleansed of sin. Every day you will slip up and sin against God, making yourself dirty. Allow Jesus, through His shedding of His innocent blood, to remove the sin in your life. Then allow the Holy Spirit to cleanse your guilty conscience of those sins so that you can do the work God is calling for you to do. In Christ, you are pure and holy and able to serve the living God with all of your life.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will believe Jesus can cleanse you from all sin; that God will give you a clean conscience; and that you will serve God with all of your life.
